Thread: 28mm vs 35mm lenses - softer image?

  1. #1

Question 28mm vs 35mm lenses - softer image?

A Harvey Norman salesman told me 35mm lens take the best pic. That's why most camera companies come out with only 1 wide-angle lens compact camera 'cos 28mm lens give softer image even around the person in the shot, not just the edges distortion. Is it true?

I was banking on getting a 28mm wide angle ultra compact camera for shots to be used in magazine print - Ricoh R7 actually.

    Please advise,
    thanks in advance.

i dont think compact cam can give a very sharp image at wide angle. it's same for both 35 and 28mm

Hmm, there could be some truth in this. Who would want to go for 35mm when 28mm is wider? That's one reason I suspect not many companies have a 28mm wide cam out yet.

I'm a Canon user and there have been many complaints that the images from the 28mm focal length of their Ixus series gives softer images compared to the 35mm focal length models. But I must clarify that such differences are probably significant only if you want the best quality. If you are a noob, it prob won't matter much to you.

For me, i'll opt for a 35mm cos I won't sacrifuce quality at all. Yes' i'd rather do away with the wide angle, though I wish technology will catch up soon. I'm a perfectionist lah.

Panasonic is a brand that seem to lead in the 28mm min focal length for many of their compacts. But I didn't get them cos image quality can't match up with Canon, in my opinion.

But views and preferences may differ.

It's more of the lens technology... simpler with a narrower FOV. Wider lenses need's more correction at the sides.
