Hi,
Due to the budget constraint, I have shortlisted 2 lenses below: Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC macro or TAMRON SP AF 17-50mm F/ 2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical? Any idea which is better for 30D? |

Do a search for the both of them in the Others subforum. Both of these lenses have more or less been discussed to death.

get a tokina 28-80mm f2.8! its awesome. very sharp at 28mm wide open. but a little soft at 80mm wide open. but set it to f4 solves the problem.

In the forum, a lot of people commented TAMRON SP AF 17-50mm is the better choice. However, too much comments, will go through more comments... Hope more users can share more about their experience

Anyways, since what has been discussed has not swayed you either way... I've used both lenses (used the Tamron extensively), and found the Tamron to be really impressive. The only weak points of it are the noisy AF motor (but I can live with it most of the time), and the slight misfocus at 17mm on the copy I was using. I tried the Sigma 17-70 for about 10minutes at a shop. It's not a bad lens, but the non-constant aperture places it at a disadvantage to the Tamron. Even if you lose 20mm on the long end, I'd rather have that constant f/2.8 aperture. |

Sorry to hijack this thread but I got newbie question ask..
Just got a 2nd hand Canon 30D with the kit lens 18-55. Any suggestions on which lens to get to cover my bases if I planning to shoot protraits, landscape, events and maybe some macros? Do I need a flash too? Thanks a million. |

as for lenses, you might need something wide for landscape (Canon 10-22, Sigma 12-24), a walkaround that is wide enough for group shots (Tamron/Sigma 17-50, Canon 17-55 or even your kit lens) as well as a medium-long telephoto to catch closeups of the speaker etc (Canon 24-70/24-105/70-200) and mainly primes for your portraits, if you don't want to use your other lenses for that (Canon 50mm f1.8/1.4 and 85mm f1.8), lastly for macro (tamron 90mm Macro, Canon 100 f2.8 Macro) Hope that helps and that i didn't miss out on anything.Alot of the lenses are overlapping and some of them can be used for multiple purposes. |

I'm not kidding. It can do wide angle, it can do close ups. There's a good reason why it's a kit lens - it's versatile. If you're going to be covering events, then a flash would be useful. |
