Unhappy Bottom 3/4 of image "Blackout"

Hi everyone!

I'm facing problems with my 300D currently. The bottom 3/4 of my pictures turn out black! what could have caused this problem?

Sensor/shutter faulty?

IIRC, shutter count should be about 10k for my 3yr old trusty 300d

I've tried increasing/decreasing AV/TV settings and none seem to help abit.

Anyone knows how much does it cause if I send it for repair at CSC?

Btw, it broke down right 30minutes before the start of my grandma's 70th big birthday bash! end up all photos only could be taken with my cousins' and relatives' handphone camera!!!

Thanks,
Nicholas

I guess that the shutter is faulty.

Cost of repair should be < $200.

anyway, its 185 dollars i last heard. if your camera's condition isn't too bad, it's still worth repairing. =)

my cam's condition is still tip top condition. Is paying this amount really worth it as it will recondition/reset/readjust my camera and replace a new shuttle to almost like a brand new camera?

Thanks

I'll try to do so when I'm back home. It's basically the image fades into total black after the top 1/4 of picture.

Canon shutters do become gooey and sticky as some rubber seals melt and this causes the shutter to stick thus not opening up the frame sufficiently. Nothing to do with shutter count - just time.

300D still a good cam worth repairing for now.

If it's 300D and it's bottom 3/4 or 4/5 sort of black-out - it's the secondary mirror that's in the way. Try sensor cleaning mode and see if the secondary mirror blocks the sensor.
This happens because 300D used a plastic mirror stopper to guide the actuation of the secondary mirror - the damn thing can break off. Canon may repair this for free if you're lucky as it's a known (design?) problem.

OMG design flaw!?!? then they have to compensate me for it's a $12,000 birthday bash not able to be photographed with a decent camera!!

Even my trusty backup Canon A95 P&S camera broke down too on that day! Apparently the sensor seemed to be spoilt because on the LCD was total black image but the LCD was working fine showing the settings and menus well. Pictures taken also turned out all black!

Canon will replace the missing piece with a metal one. Ever heard the freaky stories of EOS 5D's mirror falling out?

===edit===

If you want to get your A95 fixed for free - better call them soon. I heard the free repair notice for those Sony CCDs is expiring.
