If you really really want a wide range lens, then go for the SIGMA. Very decent for snapshots but once you enlarge or crop heavily .... not great.
Otherwise, the Canon 17-85 is much better. Generally, the smaller the zoom range, the better the quality. 2-3x zooms are usually quite good (there are exceptions) 4-5x zooms are not bad (exceptions of course) 10x zooms are usually compromised |

I would recommend Canon 17-85 IS USM for better quality, less distortion and faster AF. If you need longer focal length, get a prime 200mm together with the recommended lens.

Could i kwon where you are going? the tele you are looking at would mostly need a tripod.
Look at the 70-200F4 IS for a better travel tele lens.

But agree on faster AF and better quality... Thankfully Nikon has the 18-200 VR. Always go for Canon lenses if u use Canon...Also recommend 10-20 Sigma HSM or 10-22 Canon for travels...:P 50-150 HSM - good lens! |

4) Tamron AF18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF)
New lens http://www.tamron.com/lenses/default-photo.asp Not too bad according to my student. It is as small like the canon kit lens. |

sigma 18-200 OS hands down.
i might have gotten one, save for it being a aps-c designed lens, of which i don't buy. |

Which places are you going? What do you expect to see there?
You need to do your homework first. Access your needs: - any low light photos but you cannot carry a tripod, e.g., musuem: you'll need IS/OS - any live performances: need telephoto reach > 100 mm on APS-C format - any breath-taking landscapes: carry an ultrawide lens only if there is breath-taking scenary - family (wife, kids, parents etc) going with you to Disneyland etc: a hyperzoom lens such as the Sigma 18-200 OS - physically fit and going on scenic & once-in-lifetime hikes: fast and good quality lenses such as Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS - safari: ultrawide and super telephoto (e.g., 100-400) lenses Ultimately, you'll need to decide based on your own needs etc. No one can help you, really. |
