Default AP mode gives shutter problem in E-510

I recently bought the E-510. Recently, my E-510 is giving me this problem. When i'm in AP mode, the shutter takes very long to close even though it's not at a slow shutter speed. Then i switched to Auto mode and take the exact same shot, it's very fast even though the shutter speed is the same as in the Ap mode. Is it my cam. is faulty??

You may have set the anti-shock on, that delays the shutter opening when the mirror flips. Try reset the Custom Reset Setting. Auto mode don't have this function.

Its a feature in E510 where you can delay the shutter opening by few sec after the mirror flips. This is to prevent vibration caused (when mounted on tripod) when the mirror flips ups.

Alias "Mirror Lockup"...it locks up the mirror in advance to reduce vibration (or shock to the camera).

Actually, ALL of the E-system cameras have it.

Just a question, Is there a wired shutter released with mirror lock up?

If you're asking if you can use mirror lockup (Anti-Shock) with the remote release cable, the answer is yes since the remote cable performs the same function as the on-camera shutter release.

Mirror lockup (Anti-Shock) also works with the infrared remote.

No. not that anti shake mirror lockup. I read in a mag that it advice mirror lockup and then remote cable for birding.. It says that there will be no noise from the flapping mirror.

The use of mirror lockup and remote cable/remote control is to minimize vibration to the setup which may cause blurry pictures. Good on long lenses and only applicable to very still subject. Still have some noise though. But with the built-in IS, I'm not sure if it's still useful.

It must have been written by a film shooter whose camera has a mechanical switch to keep the mirror up at all times...most (if not all) digital SLRs resets the mirror after every shot.

With the Olympus E-system the mirror only locks up when Anti-Shock is set to anything but OFF, for the duration that Anti-Shock is set to, and only after you've pressed the shutter release.

If you're using an E-510 with Live View on, or the E-330 with Mode B on, the mirror is up and the shutter is open until you press the shutter release, then the shutter closes and the mirror drops, and then the mirror comes up again and the shutter opens again.

If you are REALLY serious about birding, you may want to consider an E-1...it has one of the quietest shutters on the market (here's hoping the new Pro-E will be the same).

Just to add that E-system cameras require the mirror to be down in order for the camera to set autofocus and exposure...if the mirror isn't down the camera can't do any of that.

I read from naturephotographers.net. It seemed the camera model he mentioned has a dual click function. Half pressed flips mirror, full pressed shutter opens but provided the focusing and lighting has not change. E-series don't have this feature.

Also mentioned that some canon models disables image stablize upon mirror lock.
A good way is to use self-timer + mirror lock to reduce camera contact to minimal.
