Default Nikon gold-color ring lenses

Just wondering, are the gold-ring on some of the Nikon lenses supposed to mean something? The trinity lenses (zoom with constant F2.8) have the gold-rings, the 10.5mm FE has it too.

Strange that the 80-200 AF-D doesn't.

If that's the case, how come those kit lenses like 18-70 or 18-135 or even 24-120 dun have the gold ring when they are AF-S?

And the AF 80-400 got a gold ring....

you are probably right..

ED glass used to be only reserved for very high end lenses in the past, and supposedly the gold ring signifies ED

but nowadays ED is popping up everywhere and probably even in the cheapest lenses you might get a small piece inside.. maybe they now switched the gold ring to signify "professional?" :P

one of the links if you trawl through googling.. 300mm F/2

Why don't ask Nikon Japan? They might have the answer to all this. Or go check it out a book at Riceball regarding Nikon photography equipment history. Might get some answer from there too(I think).

The 10.5mm FE is AF-D IF. And it has a gold-color ring.

The 80-400 VR is not constant aperture. Guess it's "pro grade" then.

You can easily add red-color rings using rubber-bands!

The gold ring is like those Oral-B toothbrush.. After some time will turned silver and you got to change it..
