Default Lens Code

Hi all, I am about to embark on a new journey. I am going to pick up my photography hobby again. Weapon of choice is going to be the Canon EOS40D with the 17-55.
My only worry is in buying the17-55. Read that some bros here got the lens with rear focusing problem.
Can anyone here that has got the17-55 lens the first time round WITHOUT the mentioned problem post the lens/batch code here please for reference? Thank you so much.

Not all has a lens code. My 17-55 doesn't have one.

Normally they only allow up to 3 units. What if all 3 are bad sets? Then cannot test the 4th. How then?

Like dat paiseh leh....later kenna mark and banned from buying

Seriously. I'm not new in buying. But i do feel embarrassed if, lets say, I go to the shop I normally buy from, and then do extensive testing and i the end didn't buy....its like not nice kind of feeling lah.

Thats why I
d prefer to have a point of reference first before buying. Saves a lot of embarrassement and time and trouble.

Only L lens have codes which depict place, year, mth and date of manufacturing. Some other non-L lenses have a series of numbers too but it's just a serial number.

Why don't you try going down to John 3:16 at Funan. They have arguably the best service around, and I'm sure they won't hesitate to let you try as many copies of the lens as they have.

Thanx. Will pay them a visit soon. Coincidently, bought my very first Canon SLR from them when I first start picking up the hobby years ago. Still remembered the great service they gave.

There are some non-L lenses with lens codes (place/year/month of manufacture) and not just serial numbers. "Only L lens have lens code" is a myth.

Anyway, to TS, you don't have to be too concerned about testing lenses. You are parting with your money and deserve to get whichever lens you want. Most shops will try to accommodate your requests and if they don't, then just take your hard earned money elsewhere.

Thanks for the clarification cos those non-L lenses i've seen with those numbers do not show other alphanumeric codes.

Yep, most non-L lenses just have serial numbers, but there are some non-L lenses with alphanumeric codes as well. One example is the EF 15mm FE and I'm sure there are others too.
