No thanks, unless it's priced lower. IMHO, won't pay that kind of $$$$ for APS-C lens, but if it's constant f4 at least, I won't mind buying. Trying to minimize APS-C lens purchase, if possible, but Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is better option for me to replace my KM 18-70mm.
Anyway, my postis more regarding the angle of view than comparing the CZ and KM kit lens. Anyone who owns both, care to take pics of both lens at the widest focal range? IQ not important but focal view coverage is. I want to see 16mm of CZ as to the kit 18mm.How much wide is it being 2mm more. Thanks in advance. |

I have both lenses. The CZ is of course way far off better in resolving details. You just shoot wide then crop to your subject to compare details at 100% crop. the CZ lens is just marvelous.

![]() Dyxum site did not mention the term "angle of view" but I interprete it as horizontal view. Actually intend to get the Sigma 20mm f1.8 prime + Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 but find it strange that the 20mm is "wider" than the Tamron based on the info. Let's not go into Image quality and I've no intention of getting the CZ, just as the above picture shows, the KM kit at 18mm is wider than the CZ @16mm. Even the Sigma 24mm f1.8 is 1 deg wider than the CZ based on angle of view info. How is that so? If no one can give samples, nvm, I'll try to get them first and do test shots. |

the more i think about the chart the less logical it looks to me. perhaps its the vertical fov? but having said that, if we shoot in portrait mode, the 18-70 would have a much wider fov than the cz top-to-bottom?

I think for Minolta/Sony lenses show diagonal vertical angles of view for producing rectilinear images, when used with 36mm×24mm format (full-frame 35mm digital).
1) Sony 11-18mm @11mm =>35mm FF term=16.5~17.6mm=104deg 2) Sigma 20mm f1.8 35mm FF term=20mm =94deg 3) CZ 16-80mm @16mm =>35mm FF term=24~25.6mm=83deg 4) Sony 16-105mm @16mm =>35mm FF term=24~25.6mm=83deg 5) Tamron 17-50mm@17mm =>35mm FF term=25.5~27.2mm=78deg45 6) Tokina 17mm 35mm FF term=17mm =103deg40 7) Minolta 24mm 35mm FF term=24mm =84deg Any reason(s) why angle of view for KM/Sony 18-70mm@18mm lense quoted as 100.4deg? Mistake? Wrong? If lense is APS-C (1.5-1.6X crop), then 35mm FF term=27~28.8mm which corresponse to 76deg. If the spec is correct, may be this lense can be used in full-frame at 18mm. but can only confirm on full frame body when it's release. My guess in theory, CZ16-80mm will be wider than KM/Sony 18-70mm.... Furthermore, CZ16-80mm is wider than my sigma 20mm f1.8 when use with APS-C body but sigma 20mm f1.8 will be wider than CZ16-80mm when use with full-frame body. |

I hope any kind soul can do a comparison test shot and post here.
I hope my conclusion is wrong and we can still safely use the lens focal range as a guide to determine the field of view of lenses when we want to buy one, especially at the wide-end of the focal range. Last edited by greenieadi; 25th September 2007 at 08:26 AM. |

IIRC it was a problem in the past, but nowadays, the FOV should be pretty accurate, anyway shouldn't worry so much over this, i still believe 16-80 is wider than 18-70mm.
