Default My first macro post Bees in flight

Some bee shots to share
Not exactly good composition, more of (struggling) attempting to capture them while in flight 70-200 with Canon 500D filter(s), minimal crop

Pic 1
This fella must be flapping faster than 200Hz
Shutter speed - 1/200

Pic 2
And this one a tad slower rate
Shutter speed - 1/200

Will try out auto FP and push to faster shutter speeds nxt time

Peace out
Ryan

Your shutter can only be as fast as your max sync speed if you use a flash; above that your flash is ineffective, ie your shutter open and close even before the flash has fired.

Faster shutter speed on a fast motion subject will result in some distortion, as the moment "frozen" on each row of the sensor/film is slightly different. May not be a problem for the bee picture though.

Actually "freezing" high speed subject is usually done by low power (short period) flash strobing in dark ambient.

thanks for all your comments.
i cannot imagine how many rolls of films a film user has to take

D80 and SB800 are FP controllable, wouldn't the D80 should be able to control the FP start and stop signal for flash on SB800? I was wondering how drastic in this case the effectiveness of the flash will be compromised. Probab try it out this weekend.

Thanks the suggestion grantyale. I have seen examples of ppl shooting using such a technique in dark controlled environments and are wonderful!

At such close distances you don't have to worry much about losing out power for FP flash. More bees please :-D
