a colleague of mine bought - and sold - a d40x. there is apparently no AF motor in the cam body, so you'll need to buy SSM type lenses and that can cost a fair bit. if you're doing night and macro shoots, any good prosumer cam can do that.

If you do not need a DSLR and want to keep the amount to a minimum, then go for the Sony H7/H9. Otherwise, you can get an A100 at quite a good price now as the A700 is coming.

AF motor: The camera has a built-in autofocus engine. This means that ANY lens for the mount can be used.

If you do NOT have an AF motor, you can only get autofocus with $$$ lenses that have the AF engine built into the lens. Other lenses will be manual focus.

nope, wifey using it to take pics of our son. USED to be my backup cam, now looking for a 7D, or waiting for A700 to see if that's any better in handling.
