Hi guys,
this is my first post on hear and i have searched for other similar ones but couldn't find any so I apologise if this has already been answered. Basically I live in the UK and am going to Australia for 2 months and have a 3 day stopover in Singapore on the way. I want to buy a new digital SLR for the trip and was keen on the D40x. I've looked at the price guide for the D40x kit and found it converts to about £350 which isn't bad but i can get it while still in the UK for £385 which would mean i still had a shop to take it back to if anything went wrong. Is $1060 the best price I'll find over there or could i get it significantly lower with a bit of batering or shopping around? Thanks for your help. |

welcome to singapore nic!
i was in the UK last month and the prices there were exorbitant compared to the local prices in general. this is even after negating VAT, if you want to count on 'duty free' shopping. i'm almost absolutely sure that you'll find a good, if not better deal here. however, if you're concerned about warranty, i think paying 385 quid would still be a better idea since warranty for such items saves you from paying hefty sums of money for labour and replacement parts should anything arise. moreover, three days is too short a time to ascertain whether anything is gravely wrong with your camera. i think my best suggestion would be for you to buy your D40x body in the UK, and instead come to Singapore to buy lenses. you can also shop for second hand lenses on ClubSnap's Buy and Sell forum, which does yield quite good deals for lenses and flashes. you can't go too wrong with lenses anyway, once you've tested for sharpness and proper function (: drop me a PM if there's anything else you'd need to know. cheers mate (: hm. when you mention UK, do you mean england? or wales/ireland/scotland? heard about England's unfortunate loss to the Springboks last night.. |

Actually, I assisted someone from UK few weeks back in looking for a camera here. After they went to have a look at the recommended shops, they did not purchase anything saying that its cheaper in the UK. Not sure from which part of UK though.

Cheers for the help guys,
think i'll get the d40x with the 18-55mm lens over here (it's only £10 more with the lens compared to body only) and then have a look over there for a reasonable zoom lens and some ridiculously cheap SD cards. Wish i was over there for longer so i had more time to take everything in but Australia is the main bit of the holiday with a 3 day stop in Tokyo on the way back too. Any recomendations on what to do while in Singapore would be great too though! And yeah, I am from England and we played SHOCKINGLY badly the other day and lost miserably. Was a pretty bad lineup all round though but oh well. Thanks. |

Do note that many shops would give you a higher quote if you're not local.
Also, take note of some bad practices, that you may be quoted cheaply for the DLSR, but often pressured into buying highly priced but probably useless accessories to go it. Be very sure to buy only what you're looking for, and don't just go into any camera shop. You might want to get an equote first from some of the shops (refer to stickies), and perhaps indicate where you're from. |
