Default Anyone here used Capture One (LE, Pro) from Phase One

When I bought a SanDisk Extreme III CF card today, they had a free offer (instead of US$99) for Capture One LE from Phase One, a RAW developer product.

Up until tonight, I really haven't played with RAW development. I'd always used TIFF or JPEG formats, depending on need. Since Olympus is dropping TIFF from their cameras, I'm making a first step toward attempting to use RAW files.

I tried Olympus Viewer 1.5.x and it's not very helpful or intuitive and, if there is some live preview, it's very very slow. I downloaded Olympus Master 2.0 to a much faster machine but it was terminally slow just in handling JPEG files, so I don't even want to see how bad it is for RAW files.

Capture One LE doesn't seem so bad but it's a bit slow, which I expect from RAW development. It does provide instant (but slow) feedback as you work on the file's characteristics. It also has some batch capabilities and they're offering a free upgrade to the next major version, apparently. (Since it was free for me, who knows what will happen.) The upgrade to the Pro version is US$365, which is too much I believe, when Silkypix sells for something over US$100 for a first license.

Anyone have any thoughts about this software? Thanks in advance.

Have you looked into Adobe Elements 5.0?
For about US100 you can get their raw editor plus many of the best editing utilities.

You can go to their website and download the trial version to see if it's what you need.

I erased my Olympus Master for the same reason, it's way too slow. The Bridge that comes with Elements is much faster and more stable as well as more user friendly.

I've been using Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Photoshop 7.0, but I didn't know anything about a RAW developer inside Photoshop Elements 5.0, only the DNG converter. Still, until the Mac version 5.0 is out, I don't think it's any solution.

Silkypix would be my first choice, but I'm more interested in what people think of Capture One, since I've already got it.

Hi,

I have been using C1 LE for nearly two years after I went digital. I tried other RAW converters but I found C1 LE gave me the best result. I tried using ACR but did not feel it was as good as C1 LE. Even though ACR in CS3 is said to be better, but I am now used to the workflow with C1 LE. I do not think you need to upgrade to the Pro version.

N.S.

I have C1 Pro and find it not so good for Olympus RAW files. It is great for Canon and Epson R-D1s files though.
With RAW files from my E-300 and E-330, there were frequently 'maize-like' artifacts in some parts of the images after conversion.

If you want to try a very good and yet free raw converter, you might like to get Raw Therapee
http://www.rawtherapee.com/
The latest version (v2.2) is very powerful and has a lot of functions and supports even E-410/E-510 by the way.
