The most likely threat of tsunami would be from Sg NE where Philippine plate meets the Eurasian plate at South China Sea. If the Tsunami is able to reach Sg and have significant effects, HK/Macau would be submerged by then and definately we would have ample warnings. The other threat would be from the Burma plate from Adaman sea, again places like Penang and the coastal areas of West M'sia would be affected first as it travels down the Melacca Straits.
What you're describing of the east side sinking isn't possible to happen, because in theory, Singapore is sitting on the exact same plate as Sumatra. For what you described to happen, it would mean that the entire sumatra island tears a whole new fault line down its eastern coast.
But of course if that happens... SG, Msia, Thailand can say hello to a whole new world of sh*t.
Sorry to hear of what I am shure put chills into many there.
I have a question for you (my knowledge on this is nil)... how fast does a tsunami travel ?
What warning time would you have to react upon ?
Cheers and stay safe
Time, is an effortless construction :)
More than 500km/h.
I have a personal concern for this event, my mother is currently in Padang where buildings were reported to have crumbled. I can't get thru to her mobile phone since last night.
i felt it too, seems quite a few mins
i thought it was my imagination. The shaking just stop at my house.
yup... just felt the move this morning too. and i thought i had a hangover. wah, the earthquake in sumatra must be damn bad.
Ah I thought it was my sleepyhead in bed - felt it when I was lying in bed @ 750am or so.
Another quake just 5 minutes ago, I felt the sway quite bad in the office (CBD area)
Was quite a strong one just now! I think close to mag 2.0 liao, could see waves in my fishtank! And I'm only on the 5th floor!
