Julie K. (windsprite) over at 4/3 photo has hit the banding issue button on the E-510. Problem confirmed by others as well.
http://fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=16808 Too bad Oly could not solve that old issue. I think I will not just mail order the E-P1 the same way I did with my E-500. I want a specific "No banding" warranty from Oly, if I ever going to buy that camera. Rumour say the E-P1 will not have the same sensor, on the other hand, the E-510 has definitely not the same sensor as the E-330, so that is not enough of a warranty

yup I see very mild banding on some TEST shots using the E510. but I am not really irritated by that anyway cuz they occur only in underexposed regions at ISO1600....
My MAIN GRIPE with the E510 is the shutter lag in live view, even after you pre-focused, metered, everything done, just waitin for the shutter... the E510 still have to flip the mirror, flip it down.... |

E-510 and E-410 have the same NMOS type sensor as the E-330. Sad that this issue have still not been addressed till now.

My 'banding' experience with the E-510 from June 2007:
http://forums.clubsnap.com/showpost....&postcount=296 I get similar dark bands on a colleague's E-330 as well. Here's some previous posts about banding on E-510/NMOS sensor: From dpreview: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...hread=23773230 Olympus' response to 'banding' problem (JP): http://digital-faq.olympus.co.jp/faq...qadoc?DI101712 In a nutshell: "reduce ISO and you'll see less banding"...WOW! fantastic solution, way to go Olympus! Surely, the same 'type' but definitely not the same. The E-330 is a 7.5MP the 410/510 is a 10MP, so it can't be the same. In other words, I think they should have fixed it somehow. Isn't there any other cameras with NMOS type?

All of them share the same NMOS sensor technology. There is probably some improvement in the new 10MP sensor over the older 7.5MP in the E-330/L1, most noticeably the absence of diagonal 'scan line' noise patterns in normally exposed low light scenes, but the streaking/dark banding problem is more prominent in the 10MP NMOS. Hopefully Oly can sort out this issue by the next body or two, or its bye bye Olympus for me ![]() Last edited by VSonic06; 11th September 2007 at 10:39 PM. |

Do you guys shoot with ISO 1600 in poor lighting conditions ALL THE TIME?

seriously after 5 months of using E410, i never come across banding, i never thought of any banding in the camera. I rather enjoy with the camera and reward with good photos than keep talking about it.

still if high ISO is the most impt consideration, olympus probably really isn't the camera to you.
Get a canon. no joking. You should know the strengths and weaknesses of camera systems. I compared the 350D and E330 and my conclusion was my E330 ISO800 is like the 350D ISO1600. If ISO1600 is impt to you, get a canon. for me the portability and brighter lens, live view, IS and dust buster more than outweighs the one stop ISO adv of canon. |

Don't even have to use ISO1600, the bands are already visible at ISO400. I never had banding problems shooting at the same ISO400 with my E-1 and E-500, all of which use Kodak CCD sensors. I can tolerate random noise levels but banding in scenes with moderate dynamic range is a big

I must be born under a lucky star then. So far I have never notice any banding with my E-330, L1 and E-510.
