    Smile newbie needs help!!

    hi to everyone out there..
    newbie needs help here...

    i'm planning to visit Chinese Garden to take some nite shot of the lantern festival.
    Using a Canon 400D , with stock kit lens, 18-55mm.

    what are the settings of the mode to look out for??

    You can use any mode you are comfortable with. Just bring a tripod and maybe play around with the ISO setting.

    At these settings, he'd need a tripod... did the TS mention he/she is using one?

    To the TS, if you're shooting handheld, you may need to open up the aperture and bump up the ISO. Note that such shots will decrease image quality and any onboard flash used will only be able to illuminate a short range of 3 - 5 metres with light fall off that will leave all background dark.

    Bring along a sturdy tripod. Use flash if you are going to shoot people together with the lanterns.

    if u plan to shoot a lot, make sure you bring extra batteries for your cam.

    ISO 400 at f4-5.6 is good enough... lantern are litted up by light... if portrait, use flash. Tripod is only needed if you intend to shoot small and dimly litted lantern

    You will know whether OK after you try out. 1 useful tip is use timer mode or release cable to trigger the shutter for long exposure shots.

    Or use the timer function. Also, because you are shooting at night, you will need long exposures. So tripods, low ISO is the way to go

    I just went last wk.Tripod is definitely needed.Dun miss the fireworks at 10 IIRC
