It will be very useful for low light situations, like maybe in art/watch exhibitions bah.. It's pretty sharp even at wide open.
Some reviews can be found here: http://dyxum.com/reviews/lenses/reviews.asp?IDLens=305 Cheers SS Last edited by steadyshot; 8th September 2007 at 12:14 PM. |

The f1.7 has the edge over the f1.4 in terms of sharpness imo. Ex-Minolta man here...

i own a super old f1.7, my 1st prime after getting a DSLR, actually my 3rd lens as well. not really impressed with it wide open. so chuck it in a corner. bought a 1.4 last year. used it and wow, impressed... color more vibrant, sharp when wide open... bokeh also creamier...

Hiee...
The main reason for it to be f1.4 is for better color. Even you take a 50mmf1.7 and a 50mm f1.4, taking a similar shot at say f4, the f1.4 one will surely produce better color. Its ability to "gather" light enables richer color as compared to the slightly slower f1.7. |

Yes, I agree with Sulhan.
Also, 50/1.4 may seem to be less sharp than 50/1.7 due to photographer's handling of the lens. It's not easy to focus onto a close subject and maintaining the focus at such a shallow DOF. This close distance becomes a factor as most tests are taken up close. Nevertheless, when you look through both lenses, it's obvious which is made of better stuff. Personally, the coating of the 50/1.4 is akin to other exotic lenses like the 100/2.8 SF and the 28/2. Beautiful! ![]()
