Arrow Singapore anime figurine protesters meet real police

    Reuters -

SINGAPORE, Sept 7 - A protest action by a group of Singaporeans with Japanese anime figurines such as the 5-inch tall Ultramen, robots and monsters with placards met some real-life police in the city-state.

A handful of fans of Japanese anime had turned up at a Singapore public park on August 25 with armfuls of the toys to protest against a clampdown on Internet downloading of anime material by Singapore animation distributor Odex.

The incident was not reported in the local press, but pictures and accounts have started circulating on many blogs and political Web sites. .

"The police didn't stop us from what we wanted to do. But their being there was enough to intimidate," the event's organiser -- who only wanted to be known by his online moniker Zer0
    --told Reuters by telephone.

He added that police -- who had four anti-riot vans at the scene -- also took down the anime fans' particulars and that they were filmed by plainclothes policemen. A police spokeswoman said she could not immediately comment.

Public protests are rare in Singapore, where outdoor demonstrations are banned and any public gathering of more than four people requires a permit.

According to his article, the police turned up because they thought that there will be a full-scale protest.
But in the end only figurines..

Those kids should either go back to school, get a job or grow up.

Actually not true la .... the gov n police knew beforehand that there won't be any "full-scale" protest there or any other places in Singapore, anytime, anywhere.

The "full-scale" police operation there is exactly what our country's top leaders' concept of good government - ie, prevention is better than cure, or simply kiasu government. The sights of the many "RED CARS" parked nearby and the obvious numerous "plaincloth mata" will erase many others who are even about to think about any public issues.

IMO, this is a very effective way to curb any public unrests, and prevent anyone from building up any supports from ANY groups, be it religion, art, students, political, business, cults, etc.....

Of course, one of the negative consequence is that the citizens have all cultivated such kaisu mentally in anything we do/manage (for eg... no photos at here, there, everywhere, no this, cant this, dont do this, etc....).

We all have a choice, and the majority of us still prefer an orderly society.....

By definition, strikes are part of workers' rights and demos are part of the freedom of assembly. As long as they are peaceful, not violent, they are legal.

You know, in irony, our Ministries have to justify to buy all these latest safety and security machines, and since they are so new, so powerful and advanced, and sophisticated, it's the rare chance to show them to the public, besides during their annual open house .... So even if 5 pp threaten, the red vehicles will be there .... and if 100 come, i think it's time to see the Leopard in town ...

When do you think we have a chance to use our "red cars", Leopard, fighter planes, etc....in a real crucial situation? ... definately not in my lifetime, nor the machines' currrent models,.... but in the name of "security", we need them.

You get used to it. Eventually.

Just like S'poreans have gotten used to "restrictions" and now some of them even argue and believe that such "restrictions" are good.
