Default Why do some photographers put a piece of paper on their flash?

Was at a dinner function and saw the photographers going around taking pics with a piece of paper on their external flash. What is that for actually?

    Yup, I uses a lightsphere.

Most external flashlight would already come with a piece of white plastic sheet to use for bounce light. Those big bounce light card is mainly to further enhance this technique of flash photography.

Threadstarter may be refering to those who use a sheet of translucent thin tissue-like paper to diffuse their flashes. The main purpose is to diffuse rather than to bounce and the aim is to avoid having harsh direct flash light.

    Something like this :

So does the TS know which already?

Both have their effects and you may need to compensate on the flash power or aperture value accordingly as this would lower the effective amount of light that will reach the subject and reflect back onto the sensor or film.

    Something like this :
I think this method is not very effective. It will probably cut the flash power, but it is not so effective as a diffused light source.

Most methods of diffusing are trying to create a large area light source. Soft boxes/umbrellas do it by enlarging the light emiting area. Omnibounce, lightsphere, etc causes the flash to be emited in different directions and bounced back off other surfaces. Bounce cards also create a larger area for the flash to bounce off onto the subject, in addition to the light bounced from the ceiling/walls.

Pasting a tissue paper in front of the flash, IMO, is not so effective. You might as well do a flash exposure compensation to cut the flash power.

Agree, putting the tissue in front of the flash is next to useless unless you are able to put some distance between the tissue and the flash. And you probably need a fair bit of tissue.

It is used ti diffuse the flash so that the flash effect is not hash. See the shadow outline and it will look soft.

Precisely, large light source produces diffused shadows. Having just a piece of paper over the flash will have marginal effects if at all.

it is useful if you know what to do with the tissue...not always lowering to ev-3 is useful...its sometime to bright already...
