Try an Epson Perfection 2450($500+) or the newer Epson Perfection 3200($700+).
They can scan 35mm and even medium formart 6x7 and large format 4x5. |

Heh..just realised that you said budget is a constraint...these 2 aren't exactly cheap, but they are among the best flatbed scanners for film.

![]() Besides the Epson 3200 can scan 2 strips of negatives at a time and does it much faster than the scan dual III. It also scans medium and large format and above all, performs as a top rate flatbed scanner. If you just want to scan 35mm film, you are better off with a Nikon LS30 or Acer Scanwit 2nd hand or the Minolta Dualscan III. |

If you main objective is to scan -ves and +ves in the long run, then it'll be wiser to exceed your budget by a little (I know it's easier to say than to do), i.e. $500 to get a dedicated film scanner.

hi,
also considering a flatbed scanner capable of scanning film. am considering between Canoscan 5000F and Epson 2400 based on online reviews. The Canoscan is 2400 X 4800 dpi and has this feature called FARE (Film Automatic Retouching & Enhancement), i guess it is Canon's version of ICE. $399 according to Canon website. guess can get cheaper at SLS so it's only just slightly over your budget of $300.just need to streeetch your budget a little The Epson 2400 is supposed to be intermediate between the entry level 1660 and the more costly 2450. dunno if it's for sale here but the prices quoted at CNET.com in USD priced it at a similar range to the Canoscan. 2400X2400 dpi. has anyone used anyone of these scanners before? would appreciate your feedback (sorry hor Popeye, i hijack your thread a bit) ![]() |

just curious, if anyone tried the plustek scanners like UT16 or ST24. They are pretty cheap at $95 and $165 respectively and comes with film scanning abilities.

I've been playing with the Epson Perfection 1660 which I got a couple of days ago. It rocks!
First, it's USB 2.0, which means the scans are very fast. Less than 4 seconds for full page preview, and each 3R or 4R size photo takes only a few seconds. No need to buy firewire or SCSI card. The software has improved tremendously since the last time I bought a scanner. It's so smart I can't really believe it. You can literally chuck a photo onto the scanner at any angle, and it will determine what type of document it is and scan, crop and rotate it automatically! The film adaptor also works pretty well, but it is quite slow. Then again it's pretty automated, so you can set it to scan 6 frames at a time and go do something else. It will detect that it's negative colour film (or whatever) and scan it frame by frame. Gives you images of about 2 to 2.5 MP for each frame. Also automatically colour-corrects and inverts negative film, so the image that appears in Photoshop is not a negative, but the real colour picture. I'm not familiar with dedicated film scanners, but the quality is pretty acceptable to me. The resolution may not match using a 10D and macro lens, but the colour accuracy is probably much better. The scanner itself is a bit on the bulky side compared to the ultraslim ones that were in vogue a few years ago. It's also noisy, with a particularly unpleasant high pitched sound. Cost was $278 at Cybermind (with GST). Most other places asking $289 for it. |
