Default Self scanning users pls come in....

I have purchased a new canon 4400F scanner. Used to let Kim Tian scanned for me. After scanning my own and compared with Kim Tian, there is such a huge difference. The color profile for my canon scanner is set to sRGB. Even though i switch to other profiles it does not make much difference. Below shots are shot on Fuji Provia slides and Xpro by Kim Tian.

Please advise on what should i do?

i think yor canon more correct lah.
branches are blue in kim tian scan.
so after u xpro, u scan yor slides as positive or negative ?
some scanning softwares have correction based on the film.

I xpro den scan in negative, scan in positive no colors. Btw after I xpro my fuji provia, the colors should be very saturated just like kim tian scan but the canon scan make the xpro fuji provia looks like plain negative scan colors.

So which is which?

http://www.scantips.com/basic13c.html

Color negatives are very different than scanning positive slides or prints. Color negatives have an overall orange mask, designed to aid photo printing of negatives onto regular photographic paper. The orange mask makes scanning color negatives difficult. Its presence seriously interferes with "automatic" correction of any real color casts. Color casts often remain, and must be manually removed. The photofinisher did this for us in prints, but it's our job now. Digital color balance is easier than darkroom work, but color balance is harder for negatives than for prints or slides.

Negatives require the image be inverted, easy enough for B&W, but color negatives also require that the orange mask color be balanced out (it is a strong greenish blue when inverted to positive). The film scanner software has a Negative mode that does this, but the shade of orange varies among film brands, and even in different films from one manufacturer. Most film scanners offer a few film types to aid this.

So basiocally, u have to scan as positive, then invert the colors.
the reason being there is no orange mask as in real negatives.

Your canon scanner is fine in my opinion... it manages to captures the details.. all u need is a bit of leveling/curves in photoshop to set it right...

u not suppose to re-level and re-curves it

how u suppose to know how blue or how red or how green it suppose to be

that's x-pro film.. suppose to be over saturated...

if u bring the same film go from KT to another lab and scan
they will turn out almost the same color
i doubt they will look like the one that canon scanner is giving out
probably iboey used wrong profile.. or this scanner cannot scan xpro properly?

In that case, i think the scanner is doing some sort of auto colour/level adjustments...might want to search for it...

Now I have can compare my scans and kim tian scans but in the future my future xpro rolls have no benchmark to compare? I cant adjust all photos based on my preference. I need the original xpro colors that Kim Tian give me. I have slides xpro scans from Grace Lab and Kim Tian and all give me saturated colors that is the nature of the xpro. But the canon scan is far way off. Any idea how to achieve Grace Lab and Kim Tian output results?

Perhaps you should get the dedicated film scanner like Minolta and Nikon.

WOW.. that's a HUGE difference!! Makes me wonder if I'm getting my scans right!

*edited*

Maybe you can try scanning some photographs you didn't x-pro? See if the colours come out right?

Hi,

Your Canon, must have done some form of auto correction. Turn it off, it should be in the preference / properties setting.

Thanx

Hey... i tried scanning my some of my xpro slides and i think i get it... it seems like the bundled software is using some sort of auto WB correction and hence the colour cast disapears...

u might wanna try using this scanner software called vuescan... u can download a trial version to test, just google for it.. it works for me... as u can switch off the WB function and get a 'raw' output

But did it give you the saturated colors the xpro neg should have?
