Default Cheap & Good 3rd party A4 photopaper

I will only be printing A4 on my S820. Any size smaller than A4 I read that it's better and more economical to get it printed at the lab.

So question is there something cheap that's close to the original Canon Photopaper Pro that's available here?

Here wht I found from Dpreview so far... so where can I get the Office Depot or Konica paper in Singapore?

<<I am trying out some new papers as I type this.

Every indication that I have gotten is that the i950 and the i850 will use the same papers. They both use the same ink, they both spit out prints really, really, fast (some papers won't be able to absorb the ink fast enough). I have never seen a paper recomended for one that didn't work for the other.

Looking through the papers I have right now
Office depot

This is good paper that can be goten for a great price if you use online coupons. As far as what others have said, it is close to, as good as or better than canon.

3m printscape
very bad ink pooling, not recomended
columbian (if you can find it, I think it is discontinued)
This paper works well
ibm heavyweight glossy
The pictures look good but they are hardlly glossy, they are more matte looking
jetprint photo professional
very good
jet print premium
not the best, ink pools so the page looks grainy but not near as bad as 3m

might work for lighter photographs and or with the right settings but you may have problems

jet print portrait studio satin

suspect, though I haven't used many matte papers it doesen't look like others I have seen. It looks like a glossy paper with a rippley surface to make it look matte. It was hard to tell if there was ink pooling because of the surface but I think there was some.

jet print multi project photo paper

It is flimsy thin but the pictures looked very good to me. Not a bad paper if you get it cheap enough.

The possible reigning king, Ilford smoth gloss

I just tried this paper and the print is exceptional. The paper is very heavy feeling like a good photograph. The image is completlly fluid and continous looking to the naked eye. Color is great. If all my prints look this good this is the best there is.

red river

I have only tried some samples of this paper but it was competing for the position of reigning king. What I tried of it looked very good, beter than canon. The jet print professional is also one of my top choices but I haven't tried it a lot either. Some red river papers have been said to fade fast. They sell a bizillion diffrent papers (actually more like 60 or so) but they sell sample packs with several diffrent papers so you can try several diffrent papers cheap.

Others have said that ilford smoth pearl and clasic pearl work good. If they are anything like smoth gloss they are much beter than good. I would be wary of classic gloss. I have not tried it but unless I am mistaken it will cause pooling. Does anybody have diffrent experiences with clasic gloss?

several people have tried epson (15-20$ for 100 8.5x11 at costco) and it is decent though office depot is beter for a little more money if you get good deals on it.

There are probably plenty of other papers that will work too.

I think office depot is the best for an all around paper at a good price. Jetprint ran a buy one get one free sale not to long ago, beter than od I think, if you can get a deal like that again, otherwise, a little pricey. I would go to ilford or red river compared to full cost jetprint, or go to od for a lot less money.

Search this forum for these brands and you will find info on these and others.

Aviod hp, office max (don't accidentally get it instead of office depot), staples, and kodak. There is at least one kodak paper that works well but many that don't which is why I don't recomend it. If you can find the paper that works good you could try it but it is a gamble to me.

I am pretty confident that papers that work with the i950 work with the i850 and vica, versa.

I use mostlly office depot because I bought a lot at a good price and it is good paper. I will definatlly be using ilford smoth gloss for my beter prints and will still probably play with redriver some more eventually.

Fuji PermaJet works too, from personal experience. It gives EXCELLENT results!
According to others, some Kinoca papers also work.

Rumor has it that the office depot paper we are using in the US is made by konica.

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but I think it is.

Try ilford galerie smoth multi-use paper or office depot premium matte presentation paper. To give you an idea of what it is, it looks like plain paper but has a smother surface. It does not look like photo paper. It is a single layer fiber paper like plain paper, not a mulit layer coated paper like photo paper. It is heavier than plain paper. Plain paper is around 24lb for good quality inkjet paper. OD presentation is 35lb(130g/m), ilford multi is 140g/m. They are both coated (more like saturated, you can print on both sides) so they do not bleed at all like plain paper. Really cheap thin photo paper is about 180g/m, od photo paper is 260g/m(69lb), ilford smooth gloss is 280g/m.

Think of it like really top quality, heavy coated plain paper. I print with the photo paper pro setting at high quality on both. On another thread someone asked about the ilford because he had uneven splotches and black where there is blue. Photo paper pro setting seemed to fix or at least greatlly improve this for him so I think this paper likes to be treated like a photo paper with heavy ink laydown. He said that he printed text with graphics and the photo paper pro setting fixed problems with text too (it can absorb a lot of ink, use photo settings, even with text).

About the cheapest photo paper that I know of that you could get on a reliable basis is epson from costco but it is a lot more expensive.

od presentation is about 16$ for 150 sheets and you can of course use coupons like the photo paper if you want to order multiple packages(I got mine a long time ago buy one get one and on sale for about 12$ and still have some). I got the ilford from inkjet goodies for about 12$ for 100 sheets.

If you want to get a good deal quick, try office max. They have great white (recycled but it doesn't look any diffrent) Imaging & photo paper on sale buy one get one free. It was about 12$ for 100 sheets so 12$ for 200 with the sale. This is the first time that I have used this paper (just got it). It isn't as good as ilford or office depot but it is decent. The blue looking black in some areas looked a little worse on this paper (I never experienced this till I looked for it due to the other thread). You may just be able to turn down the black in the print driver. I really haven't used these paper enough to play with a lot of settings. It also felt thiner than od and ilford though it claimed to be 37lb.

The office max sale is in store only I think (check their web site) and ends saturday (or maybe sunday). I don't know if office max runs the same sales nation wide but you can go to their website and view your local add based on zip code.

I am sure there are others making a presentation grade paper like this but these are the ones I have tried.

For photo's I would use photo paper. epson glossy is 20$ for 100 at costco. >>

Ok then, me going SimLim for "paper chase" 2moro.

Here more info to share:
<<This is just my opinion as which paper looks beter can be a little subjective, but I think ilford smoth gloss is beter than PPP.

I also tried some red river that I thought was beter than canon. I cannot remember which red river paper as it was given to me so I don't have a package to look at. Red river has been said to fade fast but looking at Livick's site, it is only certain papers. If I ever get around to it I am going to order one or more of their sample packs to see if any of the good ones last.

Jetprint professional might be a contender though I need to play with it more to say for sure. It's decent paper though.

I would definatly look at the ilford smoth gloss, and maybe look at the redriver sample pack (if memory serves right, the price of the sample packs is decent).

To tell you the truth, I personally think that the OD paper is great and it compares fairly well with the Canon about 99.9% of the time. I only pull out the Canon Paper when I am printing low dpi pictures and what that little bit of quality boost. Also, I seem to have found that in the environments that my pictures end up, the OD doesn't fade as bad as the PPP.

Just my experiences.

Jim R.
I have both canon and HP printers and will not use Kodak or HP papers on either. The paper is not warter resistant on either printer. The ink comes off with a sneeze or damp fingers, sticks to glass and album sleeves. You may find this acceptable, but I don't on any printer. I have found that any paper worth using works on either printer.

It's not a canon or epson conspiracy as hp fanboys would have you believe, it's kodak and hp's inability to make acceptable paper.

While that is generally true, it is not a rule. I use a variety of papers with my S9000 and costs are way less than an HP printer. Virtually every Epson paper I have used works well in the S9000 (next time you are in Costco, check out the Epson Photo Glossy at $19/100). OD and Red River papers work well too. Considering the availability of aftermarket ink providers out there one can print very inexpensively and with great results.

I liked your reply so I had to add to it.

Epson and Canon and everyone else does formulate their inks to work with their papers based on what they think makes the best image. Kodak paper is a harder surface and therefor "better gloss?" It clearly does not allow the epson inks to soak in as they should.

some of this is for better quality and some is for profit - else why does epson put chips in their inks to prevent the use of third party inks or refills. After all manufacturers just about give printers away to sell the paper and inks.

Photography is subjective so differences will alway be there

Cost is a big factor. One feature I emphasize when teaching photo seminars is that photography only works when you are out there doing it. If lower prices means you make more photos and prints - than it is good. Experimentation is a good way to learn and lower costs makes it easier.

I remember when 8x10 dye transfer prints cost $60 in the 1960s (that is the equivalent of about $600 in todays dollars) everything has its price and value

I like the way Kodak papers will accept most third party inks, I use it on a canon.

But your final statement about how the picture is viewed is the best. I laugh when people look at their prints with loops to see if the quality is "better".

I was always amazed when I worked professionally the pictures a customer would chose to buy. Not necessarily the "best" technical photo and often one I would have destroyed, but it was the memory and iamge they wanted.

Kodak has always had one thing right in their advertisments - photography is about memories

I have some Kodak Ultima High Gloss. It works ok if I set my I950 to Photo Paper Plus Glossy. I like the Jet Print Professional if not using Canon Paper.

Hello

If you go to Kodak's website and download the free software called Kodak Easy share http://www.kodak.com/go/inkjet. Then go to this link http://www.kodak.com/... .../en/digital/inkjet/oneTouch/oneTouchIntro.jhtml

to download another program called One Touch for better printers. Its proprietary color algorithms match your printer to your picture for vivid colors. Plus, One Touch to Better Pictures is simple to use - just turn it on and it automatically adjusts your printer's settings when using Kodak Ultima or Premium Picture Papers.

You have to download the first program first, then install it, restart the computer then go to the other link to download the One Touch softare. I notice a big difference using there software and these programs printing out with the Kodak Premium and Kodak Ultimate papers. I was using a program called Arcsoft Phot Printer Pro 2000 and selecting basically an Epson paper setting and getting a blueish tint with the Kodak Premium paper but with there kodak program and the same paper it looked fantastic.

I am printing on the Epson 1280 printer will all OEM inks. Does anyone else use this program and know how to use the Kodak Premium 4X6in Picture Paper with the Epson 1280. For some reason I can't get the picture to line up with the paper.

Goog luck I hope this helps some one.

If you have a sam's club locally you can buy 75 sheets of the Kodak Ultimate for $24.95 and $19.95 for the Kodak Premium paper.

Michael
Canon S820 and TylerMartin Inks
Just wanted to say they rock. I have a custom profile I started with on PPPro, and I've changed out Pmagenta, Pcyan, and Yellow. I've got a test file I use for comparisons and I can see no differences when using these inks. At 2.95, they're a steal. I'm printing much more now that I can print cheaper. Even got OD Premium Glossy, which I dont' like as well as PPPro, but it'll do.

I have had an i950 for about 2 weeks now, having come from a Canon S800. My camera an Oly C-2100uz is only 2.1 megapixel, but the 8.5 x 11 borderless prints from my i950 coninue to be astonishing. I have mostly used Canon's Photo Paper Pro thus far, but several prints using Epson's Archival Heavyweight Matte have been equally impressive. I really like the Epson matte paper. The i950 is fast and VERY quiet. I have come from across the room several times to make sure it is still printing. Very happy user here! Curt

As astonishingly good as the output from my new i950 is, I think that realistically a very large part of its success in printing wonderful 8.5 x11s from a 2.1 megapixel camera has to also be attributed to "Qimage Pro". This terrific digital printing software program is without peer if you can take believe the acolades for it from scores of users on all of the forums here. Definately the best $39 most of us have ever spent on digital photography accessories. Do yourself and your printer, whatever you end up choosing a BIG favor and investigate "Qimage". Here is the link to the Qimage website, where you can download a trial version: Curt
Amazon wont ship to AU let alone for free hehe. Even if I found it elsewhere for the same sort of money, it doesnt work out much cheaper if at all. Plus its nice to have the local warranty just incase!

Thanks for all the comments guys. Good to hear that the prints come out good on the Epson Matte paper as I much prefer the look of prints done in matte over gloss.

Hey Dave,

There's a few decent threads about inks for Canon S-series/i950 etc. Inkjetgoodies.com sells a refil kit that is extremely easy to use, and the colors are spot-on perfect. I've been using it now for a month or so and can say it's worth every saved penny - and makes each refil(or cartridge) cost about 1 or 2 bucks as opposed to OEM $11.00. Add on top the wide range of photo paper cheap and expensive this prints great on(Like Ilford for you brits) and you have a work horse. And no clogging/banding at least with OEM or IJG inks. There may be other inks that work well, but IJG is reasonable prices and a perfect match to oem.

Have a check at their website, search this forum and if you have any questions I'd be glad to help if I can.

Vendra
The small kit (74.95usd) comes to 1.25usd per cartrige
The large kit (184.95usd) comes to 0.77usd per cartrige
The kits come with empty, easy to refill cartriges, syringes and plugs.

The ink alone is 8.00 for 125ml or 0.80usd per cartrige or 22.50 for 500ml or 0.56usd per cartrige

You will of course need one bottle for each color and have to add that high shipping into the equation.>>

Tried the S$14 Printasiafun (Glossy not the Silky one) by Ilford after reading so much about how good Ilford was, but alas I was disappointed.

No where near to the Canon PPP. Can't even say it's 2 times better than the Sepom's which is 2 times cheaper!

Trying the Konica papers next!

http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthrea...threadid=29912

Maybe we can all mass order? Gonna "try" to calculate the cost involved laters..

Try the premium Ilford Gallerie series instead. That cost only $19 for 25 sheets. Similar to the Epson Premium at $24 for 20.

I've used the printasiafun satin, Epson Premium Glossy, Epson Glossy Paper Photo Weight(archival) and Ilford Gallerie Smooth Gloss before. The Epson Premium Glossy and Ilford Gallerie Smooth Glossy give the best appearance in terms of detail and contrast.

The Epson Premium Glossy has a slightly smoother surface, but I'd rather take the Ilford at $19/25 instead of $24/20 for the Epson.

Ilford can be bought from Ruby Photo.

There is a sheet of paper that comes with ever box stating which paper types to select when using Epson/Canon/HP printers.

It also states the amount of colour adjustment needed(if necessary).

You can also read about settings for latest printers here:
