Default Some lime green snake

Anybody knows what species of snake is shown below?

Encountered the fellow while exploring a stretch of KTM railway tracks. The picture above was taken minutes before it got severed in half by a passing train... I tried to get it to move away from where it was by throwing stones and sticks at it but it wouldn't budge.

Poor bugger.

Oriental Whip Snake. Ahaetulla prasina.
Its very harmless. You should have just pick it up and place it in on any bushes or trees.

Like mentioned, its an oriental whip snake. Quite sad to read about its ending.

First of, it IS venomous.

BUT....
1) It is rear fanged, meaning it would take quite an effort to bite you deep enough to for venom to get in.

2) The amount of venom it can give is just enough for lizards, it is not any where near lethal on humans, unless in the unusual case that the person is highly allergic.

3) Most importantly, this snake has a relatively gentle nature. It would not attack it handled gently.

Having said that, I guess TS did the right thing by not handling the snake, because when you are not sure what the snake can do, its best to leave it alone.

Not recommending this to anyone but I have caught a snake by using a branch with a forked end to pin it behind the neck area just behind the head so it cannot turn and bite. Then I picked up by the same spot and threw it into the bushes some distance away (it was heading towards an area where a group of people were having a gathering).

Actually, if is its a non-venomous snake, its easier just to gently carry it under the belly either with hands or a branch (if you are more comfortable). Pinning it will cause it distress, making it more likely to bite.

Anyway, its the right thing that you moved the snake away. Your intention might be to save the group of people, but it probably also prevented them from panicking and attacking the snake.

Thanks for all the replies... gosh, I was right in guessing that small, brightly-coloured creatures are usually POISONOUS. I'm not really a wildlife watcher so I wouldn't really know what a snake is or is not. Too bad there wasn't a branch long enough nearby that I could have used to pick it up or flick it off the railway tracks.

The aftermath...:

I was using 50-200mm lens (x2 crop factor) with a minimum 1m focal distance, so that gave me some reach.

This was in Cambodia and there was already another local trying to pin it down with another stick (not forked) and was not doing so well. I couldn't tell if it was venomous or not but I had to act fast so that it wouldn't get more agitated by the actions of the other guy. I used the method just to be on the safe side. Fortunately the snake was quite docile when carried and didn't struggle.

Oh my... I am saddened to know that such a beautiful snake met its end in such a brutal way. It is indeed an Oriental Whip Snake and it is totally harmless. One of my fav. snakes...

You tried your best in trying to chase the snake away from the tracks and you did what is right by not picking up critters you are unfamiliar of. Somehow, I wish I was there to move the snake away from the tracks.

AH HA!!!!I KNEW IT!!!I remember watching Stever Irwin,i know that this snake is no constrictor,so had to be venomous,u could use a branch to move it away, but poor ending for a beautiful snake,I thought this is an aboreal species?what is it doing on the tracks?crossing the road?
