I dont know about the rest, i sometime address my female friends as "Dear","sweetie" or "babe".
Not trying to take advantage of them but just trying to make them happy, i guess that will make good start for the day. Imagine they address you as handsome, YANTAO or whatever, will you feel good?
    That's just me.

    YANTAO!

Have the same thinking as you. In fact ALL my regular female friends whom I address as babes, chio bu, sweetie, darling, dear/dearie and cutie are happy when I called them that!

It's the 21st Century liao.............time have change but you need to have a sweet mouth to call them. I have feedback from my female friends that the worst type of guys are from the IT industry.........always very nerdy and too straight liao which made it quite boring to speak to. When you can speak and address yourself well, calling them dear and so on is quite fine.

    Hehe......

I've never called my friends and colleagues dear.

    It sounds so gay.

In my opinion, the usage of the word "Dear" depends on context and subject to interpretation. I often speak "My dear friends..." though my friends are a mix of guys and girls.

i don't even call my hubby 'dear' or 'dearie' or 'dear-dear' as i personally find it weird. just not me, so dont ask me why so , i also dont call any1 else 'dear'. unless i want to address formally to someone in a letter or email, so i start with "Dear Sir or Madam". or really if i want to suan someone, then i said MY D-E-A-R FRIEND.... if you get the drift

Hmm...........sounds similiar to the context of the word "dear".........which is actually more intimate than calling "dear".

If you listen to the 98 FM, there is an advert by them

"Hello my name is "Kuay Chap" and I like to lelicate the next song to my girlfriend "Bee Hoon" and telling her I lup her veli veli much."

I think the use of any word to address someone really depends on the intent. If I were to use 'Dear' openly with my colleagues and friends, they would just think I'm being friendly and maybe cheeky. Intimacy would probably not be on their minds. But if I were to use it privately with someone like in a one-to-one conversation, email or chat, it might be taken to be intimate, especially when I don't use the same context openly. In this sense, it's probably something private going on.
