From my experience, the japanese airport is the kiasi one. They'll measure your tripod and if it exceeds a certain length, they won't allow it on board.
For eg. I've no problem travelling from singapore airport, HK or taiwan. But while doing a domestic flight in Japan, the actually took my tripod to measure and say its not allowed on board. What I need is to stress to them that this is fragile & expensive item and must be hand carried. But they disallow it. But they assure me that they'll take care of the tripod and not check-in as per normal luggage, so I allow them to do a special check-in , Since i'm already at the check-in gate and all my lugguge is already checked-in. I think in general, try to put tripod in check-in lugguge but make sure its properly padded to avoid the trouble. Japanese in general are rather service conscience & do take my comments seriously enuff to personally hand-deliver it to me @ arrival point. i'm not sure if other airport hv an equivalent high service standard. |

My tripods always go in cargo
Smaller tripods such as the Manfrotto 190 etc can usually be fitted in to a suitcase anyway so damage is unlikely. It's only when you get to large tripods that problems occur. Monopods are problematic with many airlines since 9/11 and are now frequently consigned to the cargo hold. I've yet to find an airline that doesn't have a special 'fragile goods' handling proceedure but don't abuse the system folks. A really cheap sturdy tripod carrier for smaller lighter tripods (under about 4kg) is a cardboard tube of suitable diameter and some foam to wrap the tripod in. This is far safer than a padded tripod bag in most cases.

if check in as luggage must be careful to pad it man! last time the klowns at KL Subang anyhow throw my backpack and not only damage the material but also bent a tripod leg... tripod is effectively useless
...cannot extract the leg anymore so had to buy new one at the destination... i complained but everyone do taichi... lucky it was an X-brand model |
