That list can be edited one loh... I found the AVPAS list here.

In fact AVPAS is also waiting to be sued also by the papers they "scanned and saved" on their webby in PDF format. tokking about protecting copyrights.

These fall into the really ultra-gray areas, a mixed bag of open source applications that I modified and the extraction of data from arcade machine boards and chips I retrieved from junkyards.

Unfortunately, with their recent victory, a precedent has been set that more of other cases may follow.

actually i wonder, say a primary school kid join an art competition, he draws the character he saw from an Odex licensed anime he watched (copy), and wins first prize (profit), can the kid be sued by Odex?

Neh, I only modified the open source software, the data from the chips are completely unmodified. That's why the patterns I used 20+ years ago can still be used.

but still you used copyrighted data that was not obtained via legal means (you salvaged the data from junkyard -> like downloading data you come across on internet)

I doubt it, this would be like Walt Disney going into schools to sue kids for drawing Mickey Mouse or for winning a costume competition dressed as Snow White.

On the other hand, there were cases here some time back of cake shops being taken to court for selling cakes with these copyrighted characters.

    really??!!

well the cake shops do sell them (the images) for profit

btw how about game card trading? last time those dragon ball cards/magic cards were very popular with school kids and they were selling them for fortunes ... isn't that illegal as well

Not quite, that's why I say it is in the ultra grey area. The boards were discarded, so they become the property of who ever wants it. Now that I have it, my "aim" would be to preserve the data in the chips and they are used for the testing of the software.

You can read all about these issues if you are into the arcade emulation scene. The arguments have gone back and forth and in and out of courts since the early '90s and they've sort of paused for the moment with the understanding that if you have the chips and board and are testing...welll.....they close one eye.

close one eye? cannot! what you take the law for? must open two eyes big big, see anything wrong then sue sue sue!

wait, you said you were playing (consumption and enjoyment) , not testing (study and research) ... hor hor hor

when Odex come after the parents, they can say they downloaded the anime and let the kids watch to learn the values taught in the anime (study and research) they didn't sell the anime afterall

No, it is in the nature of the trading card games that you can sell cards that you purchased or won for big profits. But you can't copy and print your own to sell.

In an interesting twist several years ago, Magic The Gathering created an online version of this card game that was aimed at allowing people to purchase and trade online "cards". You can guess what any thing digital would encourage.

Yep, playing to test the resilience and accuracy of the software I modified ... hahaha!! See what I mean by "making excuses?"

And here's another excuse you'll hear from the scene - these games are no longer in production so it is impossible to purchase one even if I wanted to.

But do you know that there is an arcade museum in the States where visitors can actually play all the games from the previous centuary? I would love to set up a place like this in SG but its costly enough to purchased the dumped boards, what more to reconstruct the machines.
