Hi. I just bought a second hand Nikon AFD 1/1.8 50mm lens from a shop in Pennisula Shopping Centre. The lens is in good condition, except its rear cap is a white plastic one with no Nikon mark. I asked the seller why, he says newer lens from Nikon are all using such cap. I took his word for it, but afterwards I think it may not be true. So would like to ask around here? Anyone knows? Thanks in advance.

You could, of course, trade in (or buy) the original nikon rear lens cap at a price.

this lens is sold with white vinyl rear lens cap in original packaging.
and some Nikon cameras are sold with a white vinyl body cap too. you may buy a original black plastic rear lens cap to use. |

Different batch, perhaps. Those 50mm with black caps is either Made in Japan or earlier batches made in China. New productions are all in white caps.

If you buy a used 50mm/f1.8 AF lens and the rear cap is the black one (LF-1 if I remember correctly), then it is most likely the previous owner bought the cap separately but sold it together with the lens. I don't remember seeing any new 50mm/f1.8 AF (even back in the older version <non-D type> days) being sold with the black rear cap included as a standard accessories from Nikon.

does it really matter? i don't see any fuss in this. what matters is the lens itself and not a plastic thing that pretects the lens.
you'd be mounting the lens onto your camera right? not leaving it for show with the white cap cover on right? |

Well, it's easier to change caps using the black ones. When I head out with multiple lenses, I will keep the white caps at home, they dun hold as securely when I'm in a hurry to change lenses...

Thanks for all the replys!
To Boddah - yeah, it doesn't matter much in terms of usage. I will probably still buy the lens if they say it is a replacement of the original, but if they cheated me, I will be unhappy and will avoid that shop next time. |
