IMO, 40D on the way. 5D successor have to "wait long long". Don't think there will be a 5D successor this October.

2007 is certainly the year of the cropped sensors (1D Mk III, and perhaps the 40D?), so I'm hoping 2008 will be the year for full-frame sensors.

While for the 1Ds Mark III, Canon will invariably crank up the pixel density (or dare I say the sensor size) further, I hope improvements to the 5D would be more in function and handling rather than just the sensor. The 5D is quite close to the much beloved EOS 1V in form. If only Canon would give the new 5D the AF of the 1V and the 100% view finder coverage, that would be perfect!

this is a case of "want" vs "need"

The pics look real enough to me.
But aiyah, still no built in flash.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Canon EOS, I won't be surprised if Canon launch a few more new models in celebration of this significant milestone. Indirectly they will also be showing who is the undisputed leader in DSLR technology.

I suspect even later. Just like the 1D Mark III launch this year, Canon would not want anything but undivided attention to its flagship 1Ds Mark III launch. So the fabled 5D Mark II is likely to be after the 1Ds Mark III launch, perhaps in 3rd quarter 2008 earliest.

the larger sensor size took up much space leaving not enough space to add the flash module. Unless Canon wants to design & make the camera larger on the top
