Default Suggestions: Where to go in France?

    Hi guys,

I am going to France next week and might be spending the weekend at Grenoble.

From there, I intend to visit Nice and Monaco. Been thinking of going there since long time ago.

I guess someone might have done that before. Can share your experience please?

Should I go by rail or air to Monaco? Rail takes about 5 hours. Monaco trip would be a day touch and go. I would not be staying there since this is the holiday season I heard.

Or should I just go to Geneve from Grenoble instead?

    Any good suggestions, guys?

    Thanks in advance.

Pick one or the other, Nice or Monaco. Take the train. Just be ready for sticker shock. France is not cheap, and Monaco makes France feels cheap.

However, it's worth spending a day there. But why bother to take a 5 hour train ride one way to see the place. You won't have time to even take a few pictures.

There are lots to see at Grenoble, just stay there lor.

You should stay at Nice and go to Monaco by bus (day trip). Nice is a scenic town which is very relax especially the old town along the Riveria.

You can take a <1 hour bus-ride to Monaco from the Nice main bus station. Choose the seat wisely so that you can enjoy the beautiful view of Riveria coast-line.

Monaco is a total different experience. It is a small area and need only a day there, unless you want to spend time in the casino (proper dress code is required). But you will not regret it. Come back to Nice at night unless u want to pay much more at Monaco.

    Hope this help.

The casino in Monaco requires jacket and tie. And the enterence fee is 25 euro if I remember correctly.

Have you thought about driving? There are 2 roads, both along the cliff behind Monaco, one in the middle of the cliff/hill and one on the ridge, spectacular view of the French Riveria. With car you can visit more places.

I agree. The best way to enjoy both Nice and Monaco is drive. If you have time, take a slow drive from Nice to Monaco along the coast. The view there is spectacular

Not very sure if you're intending to, but you should stay at least a night in Nice if you intend to see (just a quick look) both Nice and Monaco. Otherwise the train ride is seriously not worth it. And as others have suggested here, best way to see Monaco would be to drive in, or take a tour from Nice. There're lots of private tours around, and they usually provide pretty decent half-day itinerary for Monaco. Not cheap, but at least you have someone bringing you around and telling you what you're looking at.

But that's for the sea... if you're more into mountains and lakes, I'd suggest taking a trip to Anncey instead from Grenoble, it's only a short distance away, so a day trip should be enough. You can easily get a train ride over. There you have some nice view of the Alps, and it's next to one of the nice lakes (I can't remember which one). And it's a quiet and peaceful place, great for scenery and relaxing. I'll see if I can dig up some old photos... Not sure if Geneva might be more beautiful, haven't been there myself.

That's a good idea! Roughly how much is car rental there? Is parking a problem there?

    Thanks.

Think I should spend a night in Nice. Sounds very tempting. I only got a few days of leisure there at Grenoble. Really need to think and plan.

Parking is a problem everywhere in Southern France during summer.

Car is about S$100 a day inclusinve of insurance. Try this outfit call AutoEurope. I have used them for many years.

While you're there, how can you miss Cannes? The best part of the French Riviera is the food, woolala! Salivating just thinking about the duck confit cooked with it’s own fats. Arrrh! foie gras ….
It's definitely a nice idea to drive from Paris, take your own sweet time driving thru towns and vineyards.

Now that we have OT and expanded the reach from Nice to Monaco, if you are driving, don't miss the hill side town Eze. It's 15 minutes outside of Monaco, in the direction of Nice. The town perched about 300+ meters above the sea, the view is FANTASTIC, and the town is a joy to explore.

Oh yes, Eze is very beautiful, should definitely take a short trip down if you have half a day to spare.

Must try Salade Lyonnaise! But since we should be talking about Nice here, Salade Nicoise is pretty nice too.
