Default What lens to bring??

Hi Folks,

I am going to some cities in France. I have a EOS-30D. I am deciding whether to bring my 10-22, 17-40 or the 24-70. I think the 70-200 is definitely out of question.

If my baggage just allow only one lense, please advise what is the most useful lense to bring along?

Thanks in advance!

If only 1 lens... got to be 10-22. I brought 10-22 and 24-105 for my recent holiday trip. 10-22 is on my 30D 90% of the time as I cover more wide than anything else

17-40L, if one lens only.

but actually, i'd prefer to bring more than one. although whenever i'm in europe, i tend to survive with a 17-35mm.

Largely depends on what you wanna shoot, and your style/preferences.

Based purely on coverage, I would say 10-22 (most definitely) and 24-70. At least that way you have both the wide side covered, and have a 'standard' to medium tele for tighter shots.

In your case, if it were ONLY 1 lens - the 10-22 would be a no-brainer for travel and landscapes. The 17-40, while a great lens, gives you a 28-70mm coverage - neither really here nor there, especially for travel and landscapes, IMHO...but that's just me.

Lens hoods, a CPL and if you can squeeze it in, a flash would definitely come in handy.

Hope this helps.

Oh, spare batts, spare batts, spare batts and lots of CF cards. LOL!

i just got home from BKK and I used only one lens, 10 - 22 mm and never once regretted the decision to use this, served my purpose well I guess. The rest of lens just stood in bag .... much depends on what u wanna capture. I would allow the 70 - 200 mm for the other extreme end

I suggest you bring both your 10-22 & 24-70. I am currently in Italy and I use both my 10-22 & 28-135 very often. 10-22 is super for architecture, landscape, seascapes, etc. It is especially good when you are squeezed in those churches, cathedrals & palaces where the grandeur can only be captured by a wide angle. Whilst the 28-135 is good for the details + some people shots and other general purpose shots.

If u r not going to the same place again in the near future, better bring both lenses, or you may just want to kick yourself while u r there. It will cause a bit of discomfort (lenses are heavy), but when you look back, the reward will be bigger than the pain Furthermore, it is a complete waste of money if the lens is not there when u need it.

Nice advice.

I am visiting Tours and Grenoble in France. Also, planning to go Monaco from Grenoble but wondering whether it is worth the trip (5hours by train or should I take flight - dunno whether air travel is exp there?). It would be like rush - touch and go. Hotels there would be too expensive as it is Euro's holiday season now. Dunno what should I do? If I don't go, then it would be a waste since I am already in France.

I guess I will bring the 10-22 and 24-70 then. Arrgghh... what should I do?

Go lah. It would not be more expensive than you having to fork out another return air ticket from singapore to France. For air travel, you can try your luck on Ryanair.com, the budget airline. Accommodation-wise, you can check out the youth hostels. Advise to book ahead though. The entire Italy will be on vacation from 11 Aug.

If you use a CPL, do take care though. Don't over do it. The sky here in Europe is already very blue. You can see some pics in the links below, which I took in Italy in the last few weeks WITHOUT a polariser.

I second that. My shots in italy using an Oly prosumer had even deeper blue skies. Realised it wasnt the camera, but the natural beautiful sky.
My vote is for 17-40 if only one lens. For the colorful people portraits.
10-22 and 24-70 if you afford the weight. But the 24-70 is a brick!

I'd really suggest bringing the 10-22 and the 24-70. There's less of a reason to bring the 17-40 as it overlaps into the 24-70 and 10-22's range.

Bring both, though it may be a little heavy, because if you do miss shots because of lens limitations, you really WILL kick yourself. Repeatedly.

I think you should definitely carry the 10-22 mm lens. I thoroughly enjoyed getting my wideangle shots in many of the cities in Europe.
Is your 70-200mm f/2.8 or f/4 (with or without IS doesn't matter) ? If its the latter, I suggest you carry that too. In some of churches etc, there are interesting features for which you better have some reach. Also, if you want to take any candid shots in a 'sniper' mode, it would be quite handy.
That's what i would do. Ultimately, the choice is really yours.
Enjoy your trip.

sorry, a note of warning about CPL. Don't ever use a CPL on your 10-22mm lens. You will have to deal with serious vignetting.
