I'm pretty new to dslr, considering an upgrade from compact to K10D, i understand that there is no scene mode to chose from, i wonder if its easy to operate? And does it suit new user? Pls advise. Thanks.

Do you know photographic proper basics? E.g. what aperture changes do to your photograph, what shutter speed does to your photograph, etc?
Doesn't matter what model of DSLR you use, actually; in my opinion unless people have a basic knowledge and are willing to try out what these things above are, they should not spend money to upgrade, because all they'll be doing is spending money for something heavier, bigger and more expensive, i.e. a white elephant compact. All DSLRs have generally decent handling, those which don't would have been phased out quickly since there would have been massive consumer complaints, etc. K10D is possibly slightly more advanced than most, but it all depends on your learning capabilities and willingness to USE the DSLR more than anything else, as well as experiment. |

Actually, the scene modes of the K100D is pretty convenient for those who are unsure of the relationship of aperture, shutter speed and ISO in determining exposure and want to have fuss free shooting. Even my Pri 2 son can handle the K100D with no problems. To get the best use of the scene modes, one still needs to experiment to determine the effects and understand when to use the right scene mode.
The more experienced the photographer is, the more likely he or she will get the best results when using the scene modes but it also means the more experienced photographer will likely steer away from using the pre-set scene modes so as to maintain some control of the exposure parameters and their effects. The learning curve for the K100D is much easier than the K10D. But having said that, the K10D offers far more control for the serious enthusiast. Both Pentax cameras are easy to use. Anyone who has used the K100D and then tried the K10D will be able to use and figure out stuff very quickly, even without a manual.

night86mare,
I'm not very sure about all that you've mention, but i think that all can be learned I ever use a film slr previously, but there are scene mode to chose from, with K10d there are no scene mode so i wonder if i can manage it....Snowywolf, I didn't want to get the 40X cos it can't AF without the AF lense , one more thing, i actually want a camera with Image stabiliser in body. I am intending to take pics without too much use of flash. so i need the IS.![]() creampuff, I ever thought of getting K100d cos it can use different type of batt, but having said that, K100d is only 6MP while K10D has 10MP and liek you mention, it offers far more control ![]() |

A little bit of reading goes a long way in understanding all that, user friendliness wise I think I like Pentax more than some other brands. But I cannot mention them, later this thread turn into brand wars 2022. |

I say if u can afford the K10D, go for it. Don't worry too much about the scene mode. Back in those days, MF SLR only have apeture priority and manual. Heck many learn on the K1000 manual everything!
Once u get the K10D, u will pick up very fast. With digi photography nowadays, its so easy to review ur performance; instead of waiting for the prints to come out to see ur mistakes. At worse, there is still the program mode. ![]()

Pentax Japan has a useful site to help Pentax users know their camera features better.

K10D has a P mode, which does most things very well. If you are not comfortable with setting aperture or speed by yourself, you can always let the camera do it for you. Along with auto ISO, I think you are set for a great start
Don't be afraid of all those buttons and dials. I myself only use very few of them during daily shootout. And I don't change any setting at all most time. Overall the K10D is a better camera than the K100D. If you don't mind its slightly bigger size and heavier weight (which are not issues at all when mounted a big heavy lens), go and get it If you prefer smaller size, the K100D, even the Ds is a very good choices. Good luck. Last edited by fengwei; 10th August 2007 at 11:09 PM. |

It is? I hv not noticed any yellow bias in my photos. Anyway there is always the custom white balance.

Theres no SCENE mode for K10D but theres the GREEN mode
Basically turns it into a very user friend P&S camera that takes care of ISO, aperture and shutter speed...and get it more or less right most of the time. |
