Hi Guys,
Anyone has used the Nikkor micro 105mm f/2.8 vr? How do you find it? I thought of getting this lens...but not sure if it is useful... Care to share your experience?

good contrast, can double up as a lense to cover events.
and very sharp. 100% crops are highly usable.

so far in my opinion, hard to find a good substitute if you are looking for : 1) a macro lense at 1:1 that doesnt extend, totally internal focus 2) vibration reduction for steadier shots at lower shutter speeds due to higher apertures, sometimes at F16, F22 etc, the shutter speed can be real low for proper exposure 3) unparalleled sharpness if you are someone who loves to pixel peep, if you go by MTF and by blowing images up at 100% and comparing them. 4) fast and accurate focussing, the buyer who bought my lense also found the AF speed very fast 5) nice creamy bokeh, you can use it for portraits too

When using this lens for portrait, how far away (meters) will be the subject distance to the camera? Assuming full body shot.
And when in macro mode how far is it to the subject? For example in the lizard pics above, how far is the cameraman? If too near scare away insects and animals. Thanks

when using this lense it focuses at 31cm (inclusive of lense length) so you can expect 1:1 to be actually abt 9-10cm away from the front element. NO extension at all is good as you dont scare insects away. for portrait full body you will need to be abt 3.5 to 4 metres away from the person, i.e. 10 feet plus. this is viewing from a 1.5x crop factor.

yes, pro glass. has the gold ring on it
contrast out of the lense is typical of that of all nikkor f2.8 glasses

about the same price as this micro lense. but the minimum focussing distance is 6 feet, yes 6 feet, 1.5 metres, so cannot really do closeups at all

Thanks Guys for the respond. If I am to take a plunge now...If I find that I don't really need that..what do you think is the re-sale value?
BTW, I have 18-200 and 50 f/1.4... And based on my photo stream do you recommend that I get one macro lens like that? http://flickr.com/photos/alpha_lunas/

So is it a good choice to get the 105 VR rather than the 85mm prime?, because i think i'm into Portrait most of the time, and it can double up as a good macro too.
Pls share your views for those who owns one. Regards

![]() if you intend to venture into macro then its a good choice, but if you are not going to venture into it that much, the $$ can be saved for something else
