I've just bought a brand new EOS400D. I would like to check if it has been used as a demo in the shop and wondering if there is some way of checking how many times the shutter has been engaged during the camera's lifetime?

Yupz around there. But then i wouldn't really want to check the shutter count unless i've shot like many many thousands of photos over the months and want to check the count, then i'll send it in.

Changing shutter is cheap, should not be a concern. 1DM2 shutter is $170 and 10D shutter is $50. 30D's shutter should not differ to much from 10D.

so when a camera gets 'tired' (high shutter count) what needs to be replaced? shutter? motor? anything else?

fm CSC technician, u can continue using the shutter unit after the max. shutter count. say 40k is the limit, u can continue until a few thousands more shutter counts.. No error, no requirement to change. But if u dun the camera to fail during your assignment, it is best to change the shutter once u reach the shutter count limit. Shutter unit price depends on the camera model. Workmanship is free during warranty period. No warranty means pay for workmanship. Higher end cameras means higher charges for parts and workmanship. |
