This is Kit. I'm new here and come from Hong Kong. Also, I'm a newbie of IR photo taking. I got a Hoya R72 days before and I used it with my friend's D40 trying to make IR photography. I had checked some posts here to learn how to make it done. It's a sunny day today so I went to a park to do a test. However, I couldn't set a custom W/B successfully. It was just keep showing me "no good", even I changed to other places and keep using some green grasses or plants to set the W/B. The result... I bet you guys know very clear.
Can anyone tell me what should I do? Thanks a lot! ![]() |

Not sure about your cam, but for mine (Pentax K100D), the custom WB, must adjust with filter on until it's properly exposed when you meter before you take the custom WB shot.
Try playing around with your settings in Manual mode before you take custom WB? Hope you get what I mean. |

You did not say the method you used in trying to set your CWB.
Perhaps you may wish to try the method used for the D80. It may work. Scroll down to the last post in THIS THREAD |

I follow Francis247's
1. Set the White Balance using some green grasses or plants with the IR Filter ON 2. Ensure that Custom/Preset White Balance is set properly (see a GOOD when setting the White Balance) then remove the IR filter 3. Exposure Compensation set to +0.7 or +1.0 or more (depending on condition) 4. Set to Aperture Priority Mode using F8 5. Try shooting in the opposite direction of the sun 6. Compose the shot first, then switch Focusing to Manual (Camera on Tripod) 7. Put on IR Filter and lens hood to prevent flare 8. Cover viewfinder and trigger the shutter release Can do it with D80? Really? Glad to hear that as my cam is D80. But some post showed that D80 is not work for IR. Anyway, I will try it later ![]() |

D80 can do IR, as it was tried and tested before.
Downside is that u will need a longer shutter speed about 10~15secs, and the CWB is quite tricky and need some luck to obtain. Try various settings combinations for the CWB (eg, iso800, ev+3, longer shutter speed) Looking forward to some HK IR! |

Another question that I wanna ask is....whether taking IR could damage the CMOS/CCD?

Half of the photographs I take are IR, teehee. But I guess, definitely no. I can't think of any reason why it would damage your sensor, heh. |

It is nothing special and not really looking good I know though, just wanna share my first IR photography to you guys. (Fail to set right W/B, just fixed by PS)
IR photography is so interesting to me as it is capable to create a scene like having snow, you know, never... never have snow in every winter of Hong Kong. So... I'm lovin' it..hehe ![]() |

This is a very very nice IR shot and with the D40!
Nice tone to the leaves on the right. |
