AF-S only i believe, because AF-D does not work, and that is AF. So all lenses that are not AF-S have to be used manually for focussing.

The D40 and D40x can only use the AF-S or AF-I lenses as the manual says... but on the market... basically it is only the AF-S lenses which has a Silent Wave Motor, which is also equivalent to the Sigma HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor).

You can check out the following link for the Sigma lenses that will work on the D40 / D40x.

At this time, the Tamron and Tokinas do not make lenses for the D40 / D40x.

You can actually use a AF-D lens on the D40 but the focusing would not work. The metering does work. So... if you don't mind doing the focusing manually, you can still use the AF-D lens.
