Just a check-The only current prime lens that autofocuses on the D40/x is the Sigma 30mm right?
Is there any zoom lens (besides the obscene AF-S 17-55mm) that has a large aperture and is relatively cheap, and is also able to autofocus on the D40/x? I'm getting too lazy to carry around my D2x now, starting to look for alternatives. |

the upcoming sigma HSM 18-50mm, but still the obscene nikkor 17-55 is stellar in performance and contrast.
tokina and tamrons are out, they dont build lenses with motors the only nikon prime that autofocus on D40/x is the 105MM VR AFS F2.8 which i just sold

Sorry.. I forgot to not put (no telephoto) in my post
![]() Casue I am getting tired of having to bump up my ISO to 1600 sometimes for events, when I use my SB-400. Have just switched back to my SB-800 because of this.. and boy, the SB-800 monster is a pain to bring along.. I'm continually afraid some idiot will borrow my camera to play play (whil I;m drinking orange juice), drop the camera, and bye bye SB-800. (SB-400 should still be able to tahan the fall due to its small size and weight [Force=Mass*Acceleration], and also the fact it doesn't really "extend" too far out of the hotshoe. |

But.. I not really willing to part with so much money for that lens. It's 3x more expensive than a normal Nikon prime lens.. I'll wait and see, look and see. Maybe in 1 year something cheaper might come out. Meanwhile I'll have to use my Monster-800 ![]() |

I am thinking really hard whether to buy a D80 now that the price has dropped. Shooting film productions is very difficult without flash on normal lenses that have a standard aperture around 3. The lighting is okay for video cameras on tripods. but is very difficult for my normal lenses. (And I am in no mood to bring along a D2x for film shoots that have dozens of "action" and "re-action" scenes, shooting over and over and over again.)
(And use the D40 and D2x as backups) |

TCW quoted me $400 for that Sigma 30mm f/1.4 with the bad peeling problem. It does not have any warranty though.
A new one from Orient Photo would cost about $599, but this does not have a local warranty. One with a local warranty would cost about $720. Yep... the price is pretty steep... ![]() |
