I'm looking at 2 attractive EF-S lenses; trouble is they only fit 30D and below and should I ever want to go to a 5D then I'd have to change lenses.
Why do they not fit the more expensive cameras? Once the CCD is bigger than 1.6 it seems EF-S is out of the question. Is it really that e.g. the 18-55 on an EF-S lens is 18-55 in reality and not by a factor of 1.6 or is it merely a gimmick from Canon, creating different mounts?

they do not fit the more expensive cameras cause their design does not physically allow it.
even then, you have to understand that ef-s are built specifically for aps-c cameras such that they can be made smaller, lighter, sharper - being optimized for your aps-c sensor. the image circle is also smaller, and as such, even if you modify the mount and can physically mount the ef-s lenses onto other bodies, its also no point. and so, as ef-s lenses are optimized for aps-c bodies, their ranges also mimick traditional focal ranges on the bodies. like the 18-55mm becomes a 28-90mm, 10-22mm becomes 16-35mm. whereas a 24-70mm will become an awkward range of 45-112mm. see? so there is really no disadvantage of getting ef-s lenses for aps-c bodies, and if only aps-c bodies. |

I appreciate your reply, which is much as I expected. The disadvantage is should I decide to upgrade to full frame or 1.3 at some time in the future but on the other hand the next step up in body is 4 times the cost of the EOS400 and 1 grand more than double of a 30D so it will probably be a very long time before I would consider such a move. As I'm becoming more proficient, the only thing I miss is a couple more dedicated dials for aperture and shutter, otherwise the 350 has far more capability than I have proficiency to utilize so I'll probably end up going for the EF-S - good value for money, especially the 17-85 IS USM.

Ask yourself, when will you get your full-frame or 1.3x camera.
Next year? The year after next? 3 years down the line? 5 years? If you have a 1.6x camera now, and need a EF-S lens, and just because you think too much for those years, imagine how many pictures you could have taken while considering all the questions you have. Just get it if you think you need it. What's important is you using it now and exploiting it fully. After 3 years or more, you wouldn't regret your decision if you made full use of the lens. |

Furthermore, which is why I'm still using 3-EFS lenses and will be, even tho I got 3-EF-'L' already.

but, you're mirror is probably going to break, as it will scratch the rear of the lens. ![]()

The EF-S range is great for travel esp. with the 1.6 bodies -- small, light and affordable. Plus they have the the popular field-of-view zoom ranges that fits the more traditional lens.

There's many things money can't buy. For everything else, there's an expensive lens.

epilogue: I got the EF-S 10-22 USM and the EF-S 17-85 IS USM yesterday; upgraded to EOS 400 at the same time for good measure and I'm feeling good about it.

I wonder if canon will release a EF-S supertelephoto lens...
Imagine a EF-S 200-500 4-5.6 IS? Since it's smaller, it should be much lighter and cheaper right? (relative to the huge primes) |
