"...If Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of
page views, according to calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year
    would be saved."

In response Google created a black version of its search engine, called
Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but
    obviously with lower energy consumption:

That is nice.......maybe CS Admin and owners can think about changing to a black background as photos always looks good when is presented on a black background.

Only applies to CRT screens - the difference between full white and full black on an LCD is very small. My Apple 15" LCD (which is running off a Lab supply, so power consumption is easy to measure) actually draws small amount MORE when displaying Backle over Google.
The old Apple 15" LCD must be 'transmissive' in the idle state and powered to block. Other screens are apparently the other way around.

The big power consumer in an LCD screen is the back light and that's on all the time at constant brightness.

    ditto.
for LCD panels, the backlight continues to be lighted up irregardless of the tones on display. the only thing u can do to save power will be to lower down your contrast/brightness settings, which then will throw your monitor out of calibration. LPPL.
    sigh.

I don't think Blackle is created by Google. It's created by Heap Media.
Like some have mentioned, black colour actually consumes MORE POWER to display on LCDs than white colour.
Looks to me like another website out to hitch a ride on the success of Google.
