Default Compression level

I hv recently started to scan my film into JPEG file and m seeking advice on the recommendation for compression level. My Nikon Coolscan V allows 5 levels: excellent quality, high quality quality, good balance, good compression and high compression. I hv used high comp for the resulting low file size but the color graduation was bad. It was a fight between good bal and god comp (to my eyes at least). What level would you use for:
1. for uploading to photo-share site?
2. printing up to A3 size?
3. sending pics via email?

Addtionally after editing on Abode Photoshop, which image level to use - from low to maximum?

Thank you.

Yours truly,
Digitally Inept

As for your Nikon Coolscan V: excellent quality level. Adobe Photoshop jpeg com. level depend on below:

#1.
a)Depend on the max. file size allowed at that photo-share site e.g. Clubsnap gallery: 10K.
b)Aspect ratio of your digital cam (4:3 or 3:2).
c)Generally between 800 or 600 on the long side.

#2. A3 (30x42cm) Optimum Resolution: 2400 X 1800

#3. Depend on the receiving end's request and size of their email box.

If you want best quality jpeg then max. 12 but file size will be much bigger.

my workflow is
1. compression level: jpeg--> "save for web" option --> default = 46(medium)
jpeg--> 8 (lowest-end of high) for pbase and other picture viewing website
2. For A3 printing: printing resolution is best to be 280 ~ 300dpi as shown below..
compression is jpeg --> 10 (high)

But I save my scanned image in tiff cos each time jpeg file is being saved, the picture is compressed again. (So if u save a jpeg file many time, it will degrade/compress many time)

3. email --> at least 8 for me. I dun them to see artifact..:P

Pls check out my pics on www.flickr/photos/krisgozali. The pics in the 7Skies and Pinnacle II folders were scanned at excellent quality and resize with Adobe PS. Those in Tioman were scanned at high compression. Comments please. TQ.
