best way to solve your problem so others won't be involved (the boss or hr) is just ignore him and act like he doesn't exist. Eventually should get the hint.

Ok, kinda read everything in 20 mins :P

On a serious note, I think you may need to take several steps, each with increasing levels of escalation. And it needs to be communicated to him in VERY CLEAR terms. Example:
    - If he persists, HR will get involved (I really agree with DP on this one)
    - If he continues, management will be informed too (prospect of financial & career ruin may wake some people up)
    - Raise the matter up to his family/friends
    - Seek legal advice/protection (not sure what would legally be considered harassment though)

We can't tell from the thread here, but there is a chance that logical reasoning may not work with him. His blatant disregard of all your rejection is not a good sign -- he might be suffering from some level of obsession.

    Forward him this thread.

    1) He will be occupied for hours reading 12 pages.
    2) He will (hopefully) get the HINT.

why not use reverse psychology? just tell him you like him and you wish that you can be with him for the rest of your life.

you guys always mention talk to boss, talk to hr.
ever wonder what will happen after that?it's even MORE awkward, more embarrassing to work.
not to mention if that turns the table around and he starts creating work-related-problems for me.
sigh....there's just no 'perfect way' aint it?
Problem is if you do not resort to this, the only one losing out is you and no one else. If there is no cry for help, help will not make its way to you. Its a catch 22 situation and its best to have a chit chat with the HR to see if you can both come up with any creative ideas to save face on both sides.

Since this case, you are worry too if u report it to your boss. THing like he might cause work problems or blah blah blah......

As you stage now, u seem like nothing can "help you". Perhaps it time to change your job.
