My first time photographing such an event. By the time I reached ECP, the elites had already finished their 1500m swim. The leading men were more than half way into their 4th lap of the 40kms biking segment and few others were starting their 4th lap...
The light wasn't too good and I didn't want to use my flash on the competitors - so as not to distract them. So, I bumped up the ISO, hoping that the 'famous' Canon ISO handling would take care of it (later I found out that the pictures are quite noisy). It was indeed a fantastic experience to watch the competitors go through the gruelling segments. Sometimes I got so carried away in watching them, that I forgot basic photography techniques. Kudos to the human spirit. More on that later... #1. ![]() #2. ![]() #3. ![]() #4. ![]() #5. ![]()

An athlete competes against the elements, he/she competes against him/herself to push that little bit harder, to attain that much more. I guess at a competitive level, it does get addictive. In the process, the body is pushed to its limits and its a classic case of mind over body.
I was witness to such an incident. I saw the Chinese triathlete, starting the 10 kms run after having completed the 1.5km swim and 40kms of biking. I could see that she had developed cramps and was under considerable pain. She kept pushing herself, wincing with pain. #20. ![]() #21. As she passed me, she slowed down to a trot. ![]() #22. She held on to the barriers for support, and tried to stretch her leg muscles... ![]() #23. Few more steps and she couldn't take the pain anymore. She bent over and sqatted, in serious pain. I thought she would give up at that point... ![]() #24. As other triathletes passed her, after what seemed like an eternity, she used that little bit of mental strength to lift herself up, held on to the barriers, took a few steps and off she went... ![]() Tears swelled into my eyes at that time and I simply admired her courage and determination. This is what the human spirit is capable of. For me, she was a winner.
