Default SSI basic student taking PADI advanced?

hi guys...as the title says, i did my basic open water with SSI and i would like to move on to do advanced...just wondering if it's possible for me to take a PADI advanced with my ssi cert? friend of mine who is PADI trained wants to get his advanced done next month and asked if i was interested. it's alot cheaper than the SSI (padi being about 400, ssi, 800?)...hope this doesn't spark padi is better than ssi or vice versa like canon and nikon...just would like to know if it's possible or why i shouldn't if it's not advisable. thanks

great...so it's recognized by SSI as well? just say in the future there's a course offered by SSI, they will recognize my PADI advanced cert if it's a requirement?

yes it's recognised as long as it meets the SSI or PADI requirements.

i think you should look at the course offerings in detail between SSI and PADI. I'm not sure if there's any difference, but the huge price difference suggests there might be.

Perhaps you can request for a course outline from the dive centres or search the internet to compare the two different courses from SSI and PADI before making your decision based on price.

don't let your wallet do your thinking for you!

thanks antacid! i agree but when you're just an nsf who needs to pay for everything himself, unlike some fortunate peers, the wallet does think quite a fair bit

anyway, is there a good dive shop anyone could recommend where i can purchase basic gear like the mask (powered), wet suit and flippers?

yup, you can, did the same thing a few years back too..
as to where to get basic gears, you can probably get them from your dive operator. iirc, there are 3 shops at Concourse, Beach Road selling them, you might want to check them out?

You would like to check out this forum site about diving its very good In Concourse Richmond at basement deals is the main distributor for Scubapro, Waikiki Dive at 1st floor deals with Mares,OMS etc. There is another 1 near Starbuck which sell Oceanic Product. As to which brand to buy will depend on your needs, budget, fashion statement hehehe etc. But bear in mind if you start off buying budget stuff then later upgrade you end up spending more...just a lesson that I have learn. Check out the forum, I learn alot of things from there, just like here in CS

There are some local Singapore & Malaysia forums that are more useful for dive gear hunting and info on local destinations as well. Here is one decent one: http://www.finsonline.com/forum/
