Press the "MODE" button until LCD dispaly shows "TTL BL".

Additional information on TTL fill-flash can be found on page 33 of SB-600 manual which states :

TTL auto flash mode: TTL
In this mode, the flash illumination that is reflected back from the subject is detected by the camera's TTL auto flash sensor and the camera automatically controls the flash output level to give the correct exposure.

Automatic Balanced Fill-Flash: TTL BL
Press the "MODE" button to display "TTL BL" the LCD panel, and Automatic Balanced Fill-Flash is performed. The flash output level is automatically adjusted for a well-balanced exposure of the main subject and background. When performing Balanced Fill-Flash, however, no "BL" appears with cameras in Groups III and IV.

• "TTL BL" indicates “i-TTL Automatic Balanced Fill-Flash” in the i-TTL mode.

More information of High Speed Sync can be obtained from Nikon USA support web page or Nikon Imaging website which has a better example.

Take note of the advise that this function is not available for D50, D70 and D70s.

Usually, fill-flash is done using fill-flash function (or in Nikon's terminology, TTL BL) unless you intend to have the intended effect that you see in the Nikon Imaging web page mentioned above.

Hi-speed sync enables the flash to sync at higher shutter speed than the normal sync speed of the camera. However, this option is not available for the D70.

dial in a negative flash ev on the flash unit until you find the balance correct. Normally, I will set it to about -0.7 to -1.0 for portraits and I may even drop it down to -1.7 to -2.7 for macros...
