Thread: Hokkaido - sweet summer! (help needed!)

I just got back from a 12 day DIY trip to Hokkaido/Tohoku region. We, wife and I, really enjoyed the area and wished the trip could have been longer.

For train schedules, I was using the following site as I found the hyperdia site confusing:
    http://www.jorudan.co.jp/english/norikae/
Note the site lists domestic flights as well.

We rented a car for a day in Biei and enjoyed driving around the countryside. You could consider renting a car for a day in the city you are in. Unfortunately, we have to return the car by 6pm so may not suit you if you are planning to photograph sunsets in Biei.

ya... actually i also felt a bit apprehensive about missing flights or train.
but ive paid for return flight to Narita n domestic flight to CTS n back...

Hi, just thinking if you are staying at japanese inn for your trip. If not, it will be a terrible waste as it is a must-do thing to try the tatami floor and mineral hot-bath. I can recommend you 2 hotels as below that is cheap at 10,000~11,000yen per room for 2 person. You can read it up by the link below and good if you know how to read chinese. There are also english links for you to read english. You can make bookings by writing in through the english site. Response is fast and there is a chinese who will reply to non-japanese.

Best part of both is, there is free shuttle service to-and-fro between the hotels and sapporo satation daily. It will save you the worry of getting lost and in process, save at least 5000yen as the hotels are not near the station. Look through the english link for more info. Take a look and consider if worth to change ur plan.

The Choyotei is inside a snow mountain region and even in mid-may is still covered with snow. Now should be no more lah. But a short walk to the gondola will bring you to blck mountain top which has tracking path which is scenic.

The sekisuitei is just 10min walk from the very famous hell-valley which is in noboruietsu, touted as the best hot-bath source in whole japan. You can walk to the hell-valley to smell the sulphur and near to volcanic water.

Both hotels provide full meal too. Very cheap at that price. Read about the nearby attractions for more idea to make your trip more memorable. Looking at ur itinery, you only going Hakodate, Sapporo, furano, and otaru which is scratching the surface nia.

ryokans are certainly good if you have the budget to splurge on it, otherwise cheap alternatives includes hostels, spartan but surprisingly clean

covering sapporo, otaru, furano and hakodate certainly is only scratching the surface of what hokkaido has to offer, but for someone that has a very tight schedule with little time to spare, those are probably one of the best choices for an itinerary

In Sapporo, try to have a dinner at Sapporo Beer Factory. Need to take a bus infront of Sapporo Station Bus terminal (stop). Must eat the genhis-khan dinner (basically is BBQ lamb) and the special beer. Take some pictures of the building, very old-world european charm. But try to make sure you have it in the big hall. There is a small dining hall too.

    http://www.sapporobeer.jp/english/guide/sapporo/

If you like crab, within walking distance from Sapporo station is a very famous crab restaurant. Order 1 of the many set dinners which is all crab-based. But be prepared to fork upwards of 4000yen/person.

In Hakodate, the morning market is a must-see place. Try to be there by 7am to see the actions. Then have those seafood-don as breakfast. I can tell you it is very cheap compare to elsewhere like Osaka, at least 50% cheaper. Very very fresh, nothing you can get here. After that, you will think local japanese food not up to standard.

Going to Mount Hakodate is also a must. Try to be there by 6pm to see and capture the sunset. You can take a bus from the bus terminal infront of train station. It will bring you all the way up to mountain-top. you can take Gondola up also but you need to alight mid-way. To me, good enough to take the gondola ride down. View from the top is touted as 1 of top 3 night view in the world, so worth to spend some time there.

i still feel that taking public transport to Furano and Biei would be a better choice.

and i would also suggest getting accomodation in Furano/Biei's numerous onsen resorts, it certainly makes for an excellent addition and allows you to explore Furano/Biei after sun-down...

anyways, Furano and Biei shall and would be one of the main highlights of your Hokkaido trip due to its inherent natural beauty, places you could consider visiting includes:

    Biei Photo Gallery/ Takushinkan

10km from JR Biei Station / 15 minutes by car, 2 hours by the bike course.
5.6km from JR Bibaushi Station / 1 hour by foot, 30 minutes by bike

    Goro’s Stone House

    21km from JR Furano station
    20 minutes from Furano Station

    Ningle Terrace *best after sundown*

12 minutes by car from JR Furano station.

Farm Kanno *lavender & japanese roses*

Farm Kanno is located about 2km from JR Bibaushi station. It takes about 15 minutes by foot from JR Bibaushi station.

    Flower Land Kamifurano

Flower Land Kami Furano is about 4km from JR Kami Furano station. It takes about 10 minutes by car. There is a free parking area.

    Farm Tomita

Farm Tomita is about 2km from JR Naka Furano station. It takes about 25 minutes by foot or about 5 minutes by car.

    Rokugo Observatory Deck
    in Furano Jam Garden

Rokugo Observatory Deck is located 19.5km from JR Furano station and about 3.5km from downtown Rokugo.

It takes about 30 minutes by car from JR Furano station.

as for places to eat, you'll find them in abundance at locations where people gathers. though do check out the prices before making an order

it was a disaster! whole trip was ruin by heavy rain... it was raining everyday! flowers r all wrecked by the rain... i did not cover lots of places due to rain. it was all fog when i was at the top of mount hakodate... cant even see a thing! wasted few thousand dollars fr nothing!

but all these are just my luck... the weather was good 1 week before n after my trip...

now then u go most of the flower seasons r over... snow not yet arrive... so wat is your itinerary?

that is the pain of a short trip. a slightly longer holiday is more likely to have a mix of good and bad luck while a short trip could be all good or all bad. lately taiwan have a bad typhoon, dunno if got anything to do with hokkaido. the worst is for those going to nara, plane explosion shortly after escape....

by the way, what time you go up the mount?

yeap, the typhoon in taiwan was one of the main reasons for the foul weather in Hokkaido, Hokkaido has always enjoyed pleasant weather throughout summer

its really bad luck i would say.
