Default Canon 400D + Tamron 17-50mm for IR?

Hi, I am just wondering whether the above combination (plus a Hoya R72 filter) would enable me to do IR photography? Please enlighten. Thanks.

yeah. as long as the IR filter fits your lens.
i think 400d should be quite sensitive to IR light. can always do a test with your tv remote controller =D

Contrary to that, I had done an IR shoot with a 400D user before, exposures were nearly almost in the range of 20-30 seconds, and it was quite sunny.

Sensitive to IR yes, but needs very long exposures.

Don't know about the 17-50mm, check the lens list in the IR forums, if it is not there then wait around for a user to reply, hehe.

One good point about the 400D I noticed is that it is way easier to obtain the correct WB compared to Pentax or Olympus, have never touched a Nikon DSLR before, at least with respect to IR so no comparison there. =)

Really? I have a Canon 10-22mm too, but I think it's really quite expensive to get an IR filter for it's size (77mm).

Can you point out which particular photo(s) of yours shows hotspot? You have quite a number of photos in you flickr page. Does the filter matter? Does Cokin IR filter differ anyhow from Hoya R72? Please enlighten. Thanks.

your does not seems that bad for the Hotspot. you may wish to cover your viewfinder when taking the shots. it will help to get rid of the hotspot especially when the sun is behind you.

Yes, the 77mm will cost you in the range of $200 plus....

I am using a 17-40mm (77mm thread) but due to the 1.6x Crop factor in 400D, you may consider getting a step-down ring and used a smaller IR filter. i am using a 67mm IR filter. have also used a 58mm before. just got a slight Vignetted on the side.

by saying that, you will also need to consider your range, as you are using a really wide lens.

Hope it help!

What about getting the cokin system instead? 77mm Adaptor + Holder + P007 costs about $60. What do you think?

Does the holder system works? guess not as there will be light leak. alt, try Ark19 method on DIY Filter ring found on the sticky.

You mean you're using the cokin holder and you managed to keep the light leak at zero level? If yes, please share how you do so.

Then I suppose covering the lens with a piece of black cloth would also work?

OK. Thanks, bro. I can now get the cokin system with P007 and try out IR photography with both my Tamron 17-50mm and Canon 10-22mm.
