M d70 is my first and only dSLR to date. I'm the second owner, so sadly no more warranty. It's in my possession for around a year, and i've barely made 8k pics so far.
A few months ago, i discovered that the on/off switch is not responding well. The camera turns on by itself even when the switch is off, and does not go off occasionally when i switch it off. Fearing that a repair would cost almost another camera, i ignored this prob and resorted to removing the battery during storage. Now, the status LCD screen suddenly has several icons mis-functioning. Some of the WB icons, as well as the file quality icons refuse to show. Operation isn't fully compromised yet, but i wonder if the whole LCD might eventually kaput. In a short span of a year (amid careful handling and relatively low shutter count), problems are cropping up here and there. My impression of nikon's reliability has dropped considerably (my FM is still working fine though), but i din expect it to spoil so soon. Anyone experienced the above problems before? What would be the estimated costs? Hopefully i dun have to spend as much as a new 2nd hand cam. |

Well, its not fair to compare a DSLR with a mechanical film cam. Did you shoot 8k (not counting prev owner shots) of photos with your FM? For the problems that you stated, a few hundreds may be needed but still it's best to bring it down to NSC for a quotation (which I don't think there's any charges if you do not want the repairing services), ![]() |

Dun be mistaken... i am not directly comparing the FM with d70. I'm also aware of the many long lasting d70 cams out there. I'm just plain unlucky to get a lemon... i was hoping if someone would advice me on the estimated costs and whether it would be worth it to repair.

seems to me that it is just a circuit connection problem. doesn't look expensive to me. may not need to replace any parts. bring it down to the service centre. dun worry.

My previously-owned d70 seemed to have the same problem as yours. Just bring it to the service center. You might have the repairs free if the cause is the design problem of the d70.
