Noise appears at high ISO and does not relate to focal lengths...

Of course if you enlarge from a crop, the noise will be enlarged and it becomes more obvious too.

Or did I misunderstand your question?

You should also check you ISO setting. Like zac said, focal length and noise don't really relate to one another.

Are you currently using the D70/D70s? I assume so based on the kit lens you're using. Based on personal experience, the noise lvl for the cam is pretty high compared to newer Dslrs, especially at ISO 800 and above. For me at ISO200, it can be rather unbearable in the shadows.

Avoid it if you can... It is always best to try to get the composition and crop right in-camera, rather than try to crop and enlarge later in post-processing.

I understand that sometimes this having to crop and enlarge is unavoidable, in such a situation, heh. It is best that you pull out all the tricks in the bag to ensure that you you get a good enlargement. Having a very high megapixel count would help greatly in such crop-enlarge scenarios.

Use NeatImage to reduce noise. Very effective. =) use low ISO for low noise.
