The latest in the world of photojournalism unveiled at inaugural CLICKART convention.
Opportunity for participants to re-discover Singapore’s arts scenes on photo shoots led by master photographers

Singapore, 1 April 2003 - Photojournalists and photography enthusiasts will have the rare opportunity of discussing the latest developments and techniques that are impacting the profession and the art of photography. Issues such as the future of photojournalism, creativity and the adoption of digital format will be discussed at the inaugural ClickArt - World Photojournalist Meet 2003 (ClickArt 2003).

To be held at the Raffles City Convention Centre from 6 to 8 June 2003, the event will feature a keynote presentation, hands-on workshops, photo shootouts where participants will be able to get tips from master photographers, and a panel discussion.

Several well-known names in photojournalism have been invited to speak at the convention. Heading the list is keynote speaker Steve McCurry. McCurry, a celebrated National Geographic photographer, will showcase his forte in capturing the human experience on film in his presentation, 20 Years of Photography in Asia. He will take participants through the highlights of his career behind the lens and provide updates on his recent work to places including Tibet, Cambodia and Afghanistan.

McCurry will also speak at a workshop on Taking Portraiture to the Next Level. “During my workshop, participants will be inspired to forgo traditional rules of portrait making and to define a personal vision and approach. I hope to impart my skills in capturing the soul of a person. It was during my early days in India that I learned the art of watching and waiting on life. If you wait, people forget your camera and the soul drifts into view,” he enthuses.

Sharing the limelight with McCurry as workshop speakers are Chip Simons (USA), Tay Kay Chin (Singapore) and Masahiko Yamamoto (Japan).

Simons is a master photographer who is much sought-after and he will conduct a workshop on Location Lighting. He will focus on the use of proper lighting for each situation, including a special technique he has mastered called ‘light painting’ where lighting implements such as flash lights and spotlights will be introduced.

Tay, who is Hasselblad’s Master of Photography for 2003, will delve into his personal approach towards daily assignments in his workshop, An Idea a Day. Participants in his session will be challenged to generate new ideas from repetitive and mundane subjects.

With the digital format increasing in popularity among press photographers around the world, Asahi Shimbun photo editor Yamamoto will share his expertise on Digital Photography and Its Impact on Photo Editing. He will discuss the techniques involved and how digital photography differs from traditional film photography.

Participants can take advantage of the unique interactive opportunities with leading photo professionals and explore several arts belts and cultural enclaves, based on the themes of Space, Behind the Scenes, Reaching out, Asian Roots and Arts at Work. The routes will include a special tour of Singapore’s newest and most exciting arts development, Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, the Civic District, Singapore River, Orchard Road, arts belts like Robertson Quay, Chinatown, Waterloo and Little India, as well as other arts facilities and activities in other parts of Singapore.

Participants will also get to engage the four speakers in a panel discussion, The Future of Photojournalism, held on the final day.

At the end of the event, participants can look forward to the promise of international publicity and professional recognition as photographs taken during the shootouts can be submitted as entries for the ClickArt Best Photography Award and the Best Photo Essay Award.

“There has been a proliferation of arts performances, art appreciation and related activities in recent years, as Singapore drives towards becoming a global city for the Arts. ClickArt World Photojournalist Meet will not only promote the art of photography but also capture the vibrancy of the local arts scene,” remarks Mrs Susan Loh, Co-Chairman of the organising committee and Director of Corporate Communications and Marketing at the National Arts Council.

“We are pleased to offer delegates the chance to witness and document the process that Singapore is undergoing as we move towards the goal of becoming a vibrant Arts city. The annual Singapore Arts Festival, which will coincide with the event, further expands the diverse range of available subjects for the participants,” said Mr David PC Tay, Chairman of the ClickArt Organising Committee.

Networking among the best in the photojournalism field abounds as the organisers - the National Arts Council, Singapore Tourism Board, Contact Singapore and Singapore Economic Development Board - will be hosting some 100 photojournalists from all over the world during the ClickArt event.

Deputy Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong will be the guest-of-honour at the opening of ClickArt 2003 and the concurrent Photo & Imaging Asia exhibition. The official opening will be held on 6 June at Suntec Singapore. Other concurrent events are the ASEAN Photo Exhibition and Lianhe Zaobao’s Great Moments in Lianhe Zaobao Photojournalism photo exhibition.

ClickArt 2003 is organised in partnership with The Photographic Society of Singapore, Singapore Press Holdings, MediaCorp Press and Meeting Planners International. Its main sponsor is the Lee Foundation. Other sponsors are Nikon and Fuji Film, Raffles the Plaza, Apple Singapore, CHIJMES and Epson Singapore.

Steve McCurry
Steve graduated cum laude from the College of Arts and Architecture at the Pennsylvania State University. His forte is in covering international and regional conflicts such as the Iran-Iraq war. Through his lenses, he has shown the world thought-provoking images of the human consequences of war. The pictures he took in Afghanistan just before the Russian invasion propelled him into international prominence. A multi-award winner, Steve was named the Magazine Photographer of the Year by US-based National Press Photographers Association in 1984. He also garnered four first prizes in the World Press Photo Contest in the same year.

Chip Simons
Following studies in art and photography, Chip moved to New York. His first series of work ‘I Am A Dog’ was initially published in Andy Warhol’s ‘Interview’ magazine. Subsequent publications showing Chip’s photos included the New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Time, Newsweek, Fortune and Forbes. In the mid 1980s Chip had emerged as an important photographer with a unique style of seeing coupled with vivid colour and innovative lighting techniques. Chip’s images never cease to push his equipment and his vision to the edge. An artist with a prolific repertory of ideas, he has been recognised by Nikon on both their ‘Legends’ and ‘Masters’ series.

Tay Kay Chin
Kay Chin trained as a photojournalist at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Upon graduation, he joined The Straits Times, becoming its Picture Editor in 1999. In 2000, he founded the Nikon Media Photographer of the Year award for Singapore-based photojournalists. He was one of four Masters at the Month of Photography in Singapore in 2002. Based on his series on panoramic Singapore, Hasselblad selected him as one of their 12 Masters of Photography for 2003.

Masahiko Yamamoto
Masahiko joined Asahi Shimbun after graduating from the Brooks Institute School of Photography, USA, in 1982. He is now the paper’s Photo Editor based in Tokyo. Through the years he has played a key role in documenting many global events including three Olympic Games. He was also the US correspondent during the 1996 presidential elections. Recently, he was the Chief Photo Editor of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Masahiko also holds a law degree awarded by Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan.

Taking Portraiture to the Next Level
Steve McCurry
This is a workshop about possibilities, control and style: how to recognise a gesture or mood - something intangible - and make it into a strong portrait. In this hands-on class you will learn how to go beyond the ordinary to arrive at the soul of a portrait. Combining discussions, critiques, demonstrations, and his own portraits and stories, Steve will inspire participants to forgo the traditional rules of portrait making to define a personal vision and approach.

Location Lighting
Chip Simons
This workshop will teach you how to evaluate a location and determine the proper lighting for the situation. Chip will describe how to use available and artificial light in a creative and resourceful way. Included in this is the technique he has mastered and which he calls ‘light painting’ where the photographer uses all sorts of lighting implements such as flash lights and spotlights. He will place emphasis on how to shape the mood and feel of a photograph through the use of various lighting techniques.

An Idea a Day
Tay Kay Chin
One of the biggest challenges faced by photographers is finding new ways to look at repetitive and mundane subjects. This is especially true for newspaper photographers who find themselves having to do the same kind of stories over and over again. In this workshop, participants will be challenged to rethink the daily assignments and to develop their own strategies for idea generation. Using examples from his personal projects, Kay Chin will share his ideas and thoughts on research as well as execution.

Digital Photography & Its Impact on Photo Editing
Masahiko Yamamoto
Digital photography is increasing in popularity since its introduction some 7 years ago. In fact, many press photographers around the world have embraced the digital revolution for the past 4 to 5 years. In his presentation Masahiko will highlight the key differences between film and digital photography, with emphasis on the techniques used to capture the image. He will also offer the attendees an insight the Photo Editor’s daily struggle to identify choice pictures.
