    Default Dog Breeder - Rhodesian Ridgeback

    Hi,

    Does anyone know of any local dog breeder specialising in Ridgebacks?

    Thanks

    guess the acquaintaince i met last month with his 2 ridgebacks and 8 pups are in for a bunch of trouble then.

    the breed isn't banned, i think you got your facts wrong.

    AVA's website does not seem to have a list of dog breeds which are "banned" in S'pore. However, they have a list of dog breeds which must be muzzled when in public. And Rhodesian Ridgebacks do not seem to be on that list, which is quite puzzling because Rhodies can be known to be quite aggressive.

    In Australia, there were several cases of children mauled by Rhodies, which is quite sad. I do know a couple of Rhodies who can be very gentle.

    Is this the same breed which was originally bred to hunt lions?

    Think I saw a owner around Frankel area walking his dog. Wasn't muzzled either. Looks friendly too...

    Yeah, historically, they make very good hunting dogs.

    Frankel area.. I think that big dog, which you are referring to, is a Great Dane, not a Rhodie.

    The RR has distinctive characteristics, one of which is the ridge of hair on its back (hence its name)... see pic

    I think with any dog, proper training from a young age is necessary to keep your pet in check. This breed has a dominant character which requires an even more dominant owner. Best to show who's the alpha male around the house from young. The breed doesn't take well to kids and does not like rough play which children often engage in. They sometimes react to such play in a violent outburst. I wouldn't be surprised if those maulings in Australia were a result of rough play.

    I know someone who has one - huge dog but friendly. I think they had to import theirs from Australia.

    Definitely a Ridgeback... I asked the owner why the dog has a strip of fur which faces the wrong direction on the back...

    Yes, this breed was bred to hunt lions in Africa.

    Not sure if it was locally bred or imported, but I've seen Rhodesian Ridgeback pups for sale at Ricted Kennels at Seletar Farmway.
    There are some breeders who will help you import a specific breed if its a rare breed hard to find locally.

    I totally agree with you. Some breeds should only be kept by an experienced dog-owner.

    Really? I didn't know there is a Rhodie in the neighbourhood. Must keep my eyes peeled for him/her!

    Wow bred to hunt lions!

    Must be a huge & brave dog.

    It was pretty tough shooting a ridgeback in a studio, especially when the dog had never encountered stairs before and we're on the first level:

    They can be great companions. But please, if anyone is thinking about getting one - make sure you have a LOT of space. Ridgebacks need space to roam and play. And, as with any dog, you'll need to give them a decent amount of attention.

    Dogs that need to be muzzled are classified as Category B.

    Dogs that are banned in Singapore are classified as Category A.
    The current list of dogs in this category are :
    * Pit Bull - including the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Bull Dog
    * Neapolitan Mastiff
    * Tosa
    * Akita
    * Dogo Argentino
    * Fila Braziliero
    * crosses of these breeds

    The way my house renovations are going at the moment, a RR may not be the most appropriate breed to get. The garden keeps shrinking and for a breed which requires space, the front yard may feel like a prison.

    (Sad) I recall reading some children were mauled by pit bulls - small but ferocious dogs, bred specifically to fight. Very impressed by these kind of loyal companions, small but brave & deadly, can make very good body/house guards.
