Hi Guys,
Need a Macro lens for my new D200. 105 VR is out of budget and finally got down to the above two Please share your experience about which one is better. "Better" in terms of Sharpness / Bokeh I will be using it as Portrait & Macro both so you get the idea what I am looking for Best Regards

So my guess is that your mouth dropped to the ground when you saw my pic and you salivate till a pool of puddle was on the ground DIDN'T YOU??
![]() I think there are few people who own these two lenses. Tammy is pretty sharp, from what you have seen in my pics. Bokeh is pretty nice as you can see. I have seen portraits being taken with Tammy. http://www.flickr.com/photos/apenutsack/544071387/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/apenutsack/531412910/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/apenutsack/526116886/ However, some people may consider it too sharp for portrait use...due to its sharpness...especially the ladies however, you can probably adjust it with gaussian blur.Drawbacks of Tammy: plastic build (not an issue for me), noisy AF(not an issue for me), hunts and has problems in AF in low lit situation (it could be an issue for portrait shots, macro shots seems to be mostly done in bright light so it shouldn't be an issue...unless you want to do some studio macro shots). I can tell you that Tammy seems to be more popular than Tokina 100mm...since in all forums that discusses about macro lenses...Tammy is 99% often brought up..i have never heard of Tokina..usually it's Tammy, Sigma 105mm and Nikon's 60mm or ??150mm??. ]Hi Guys, Need a Macro lens for my new D200. 105 VR is out of budget and finally got down to the above two Please share your experience about which one is better. I already know about Tammy and know what it can do, thats why its one of my choices. Just read somewhere that Tokina focuses faster and also quite sharp but just needed opinion from the experts. Your macros are truly remarkable Best Regards,

I'd tested Tamron for portrait shot, I'm very well impressed of the sharpness...but one prob which I noticed is the AF is bit slow...I dont much like the built (high grade plastic)...like blowblue said, noisy AF
like the TS I'm planning also to buy Marco lens and I'm considering Tokina because of its built but I still dont know its performance.... We didn't hear any reviews here in CS regarding Tokina 100mm MACRO because it just came out of the market recently not like the tamy 90mm... I think everybody has already with thier tamy 90mm before Tokina came out of thier DLSR MACRO lens Last edited by RG550R; 15th June 2007 at 02:37 PM. |

Performance for both of these two babies are pretty good.
they are both highly recommended by the tests performed here http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/len...0_28/index.htm http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/len...ikon/index.htm they are both written as highly recommended by both authors. You might want to try asking questions at photo.net NIKON forum...they have crazy guys out there who have lots of money to spend and have time comparing between lenses. Here's one that is most recent and was discussing the same issue as you did http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-...?msg_id=00LSEt let me know what you guys choose in the end. |

Amazing... Both seems identical in picture quality! Thanks for the useful link. This is what I was looking for.
I will get the Tokina for the extra 10mm and Metal construction

DAng....definitely the extra 10mm reach will help in photographing metallian's nice scary snakes. Plus Tokina is not much differently priced than Tamy and nice finish...and Tamy 180mm is not as sharp as Tokina 100.

both seems to be from the same company. The push pull manual control and the overall look and wording. Both are made in japan. Tamron 90mm is better recommended compared to tokina. But I guess both are good.
Am using a Tamron myself. Pretty impressed with what it can achieve with almost half price of the nikon VR version. Only gripe about it is the front protrusion on macro focusing. Very long lens. hehe Regards, tltan |

Where did you get your source that tamron is better than tokina?
Both are made by diff companies, but they both use lenses manufactured by Hoya.

I mentioned "better recommended ... I believe they are equally good" not that Tamron is better.
As for manufacturers, take a look at their constructions. They are "very" similar. Optically I think the same too. But somehow, it was not that highly recommended for Tokina across a few forums. Anyway, for one, I dont believe too much in lense being the ultimate in photo. Your picture composition speaks. U have nice pics to show above. I have nothing...so I cant speak ---- i think so. no sharpening at all. I dont see the point of sharpening if it's that sharp..lol
I just made changes to contrast and colours since i shot it at low exposure. Some lenses are so sharp that you dont bother sharpening them..lol This one was taken with nikon 50mm f/1.8 one of the sharpest nikon lenses (told by most if not all websites). http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?p...079016&size=lg No sharpening was done..and you can see me in the top right hand corner of the bubble. I usually do sharpening in post processing. Think in cam sharpening not as good due to algorithms. But as usual, I dont think so much. just go enjoy shooting. Nice pics of the froggies. Yeh, 50mm f1.8 and tamron 90mm are both sharp lenses. Dont worry too much. Whats left is imagination huh. I like this as well. Very strong, pulling ppl in. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6057953 Last edited by tltan; 15th June 2007 at 02:08 PM. Reason: to add a link |
