    there is another alternative
    but i suggest u shoot behind acrylic sheet.


    for food cooked over a grill, turn up the heat and drip some oil and let it smoke...

    not proving anything to u but shooting behind acrylic may cause reflections and glare, depending on the setup and environment.

    Speaking about enhancing steam, a simple solution, use a darker background at the upper end ie above the food. This can be created by using shadows.

    make sure your food is hot, take the picture of it in a very cold aircon room.

    with adequate condensation you can visualize steam much better.
